it's funny, but the two best "post-rock" records i heard this year (apart from godspeed's, which was released in '98) came from brokeback and papa m, two tortoise emigres who both left that group for the same reason: to pursue less structured approaches to the idiom. (it's precisely in tortoise's overbusy structure, beginning with "millions now living...," that i find the source of my boredom with them -- same with squarepusher and recent autechre.) another tortoise departee, bundy brown, also put out one of my favorite records of '97, "directions in music," which i still listen to about once a week. it's funny, but tortoise seems to have become more significant to me as an alma mater... obidm: the new fenn o berg cd on mego is a pretty fun listen. (this is a compendium of fennesz/jim o'rourke/peter rehberg live shows from '98.) a total fucking mess, but a pretty one, with smears of electronics and guitar and heavily fuzzed out farmers manual-esque beats gathering together in little clouds of chaos. recommended to those who thought computer music could only be "stuffy." sc --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
