re: Dan's rave professionals post...
djkc muttered something about...

::Notifying sysadmins is totally unwarranted. Dan is not DIRECTLY making a
::profit through the net. His Registry is a collection of info FROM the net
::and is FREE to all who wish to register! His service, external from the
::net (I hope), is what he is charging for. It is perfectly fine to conduct
::an exchange of information over the net which may lead to profits indirectly.
::The net is being used by businesses everyday. The convenience of the net
::most likely assists in their business, thus making/increasing profits.
Well, that's not entirely true. Yes, businesses do use Internet, but not
the way we use it. They use the routing and gateways of the Net but it's
not like they're posting to newsgroups of mailing lists. Dan and I have had
a few discussions over this issue and we have come to agree to disagree.
BTW, sorry this is so old. I'm a bit behind on my list reading.
::Usenet used to not be allowed for any sort of commercial posts, but I believe
::they have a section of newsgroups for that now. I don't think an email list
::or small services conducted by email is blatant abuse of the net.
This is true, and from what I recall all of those areas are moderated,
heavily.
::However, I do believe asking for money defeats the purpose of rave.
::Dan, why charge money? I understand if it's to cover your costs (breakeven),
::but try to be realistic - Do you think people will really go for it if it's
::not free? I mean, they probably already have adequate people, connections,
::and information.
This was always my argument when talking with Dan, but like I said above...
::That's my $.02
And my $.005
