Well, you'd have to look pretty hard to find a group that's more diverse than the Palominos. Basically they're a revolving door of top-notch musicians who team up in different combinations for different albums. The group's mainstay is drummer Anton Fier; he appears on every album (5? 6? I forget how many they have out.) Their musical output runs the gamut from downtown NY jazz to country rock to a 4AD-ish sound on their latest album, which contains the single you mentioned. Personally, I find all their work to be interesting, but not essential listening. This is one of those cases where the total does not equal the sum of the parts. If you're still interested, though, I'd recommend their second album, "Visions of Excess," which has some great vocals by Michael Stipe, Syd Straw, and John Lydon. -- Mark Turner mturner@netcom.com
