Highpoint Lowlife newsletter / Mid-April 2006
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Hello!
Just a quick mid-month update as we some have late news, and a few
nice downloads and a couple of shows for you this week!
First up, a quick update to the website, where we now have an rss feed,
like we've been promising for months! You can subscribe at:
http://highpointlowlife.com/feed.rss
For those of you new to rss, an rss feed is a simple text syndication
method. With it, you can either take the feed and put it on another
website, or you can use a personal rss reader, which acts and looks
quite similar to an email program. Most news sites all have rss feeds
now, and with a reader program, you can subscribe to your favorite
sites, so that instead of remembering to go read your favorite sites,
you can now see in one place which new content or news has
been added. For more info, have a look at:

Okay, enough wit the geek stuff...

Mandelbrot Set live on thursday 20th April, Buffalo Bar
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Mandelbrot Set are a late addition to the next BIGBIGLOVE
monthly session at the Buffalo Bar. Expect a night of indie-rock,
shoegaze, noise and crazy electronics. They will be joining 28 Costumes
and Butterfly Explosion. For full lineup and playlists, check out:
http://www.myspace.com/bigbiglovefanzine
We just put together a bit of a press blurb for the Mandelbrot Set..
"The Mandelbrot Set are a Loud band. They like their drones and
their converse-gazing, they like to use sample pedals and to change
instruments during sets, but mainly they like to be Loud, and they
like to do it differently.
Formed by Keung, from the ashes of his previous band, Hentai
( "It's a relief to know that not all angsty teenagers listen to Radiohead
and spend the rest of their adolescence trying to emulate Muse. Some
of them stick Boards Of Canada stickers on their guitars, acquire DD-5
sample pedals and violin bows, and proceed to work the Mogwai-esque
quiet - loud - louder - FUCKING APOCALYPTIC dynamic till their ears
bleed. So thank fuck for Hentai." Drowned In Sound ), The Mandelbrot
Set take their love of all things Constellation,their penchant for electronics,
effects pedals and live sampling, their Shellac-esque rhythmic aggression,
and combine it all into a wall of noise, melody and epic structure that
would make Kevin Shields weep with envy.
Joined by Simon on drums (formerly of a ska/punk/reggae band called
Supertrix), and multi-instrumentalist Melisa (onetime percussionist for
London Schools Symphony Orchestra, and currently working on her
Music BA in Norwich), the disparate influences and creative energies
of the three combine to create a inspired pallette of sound and texture,
a dense cloud of harmonic resonance, yet timed with enough space
and clarity for all the individual elements to shine through."
Friday night Small Pieces Radio show with Matthew Rozeik Live
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Midnight on Friday sees us back at the helm of Resonance FM,
overseeing the weekly Small Pieces radio show. This week in the
studio we have a live set from Matthew Rozeik (which should hopefully
include a little turntablism!), alongside the usual drunken banter from
thorsten, keung and mat.
Nvelope at The Eagle
++++++++++++++++
Saturday night sees Thorsten Sideb0ard play a DJ set at Nvelope
at The Eagle, which is just off OId Street. He will be playing alongside
Simon Manilla (Lo Recordings), DJ Stayhome (Law + Auder), and
Wilf303 ( Nvelope).
Other bits..
++++++++++++++++++
We have a load of other shows coming up between now and the end
of the month, including randomNumber with Quack Quack in Leeds,
Bovaflux with Kosmik Kommando and B12 in Birmingham, Izu at
Club 69 in Paisely, Rose and Sandy (Marcia Blaine) playing Triptych
in Glasgow with Andrea Parker, Matthew Rozeik at The Water Rats,
and a very special Mandelbrot Set show at a secret London
warehouse location. If any of them tickle yer fancy, head on over
to the website for more info and links..
many thanks!
thorsten
