I totally agree; () is terrible. I have been a huge
Sigur Ros fan ever since I saw them live at Coachella
a few years back. Their first album was a fucking
masterpiece. SOmeone here criticized "Agaetis..." for
being a collection of songs and not a cohesive album.
Even if I thought that was true, and I don't think it
is, I wouldn't care. The songs on "Agaetis..." were
beautifully crafted. They had great melodies,
stunning arrangemets, and they evolved over time.
Sigur Ros clearly had a lot of great ideas and
executed those ideas with great skill when making that
album.
(), on the other hand, is boring, shoe-gazer,
prog-rock. Instead of writing great songs, Sigur Ros
has elected to bludgeon their listeners with mopey,
repetitive dirges that all sound more or less the
same. Worse yet, nearly all of these songs were fully
formed and played during their 2001 tour. So, not
only is () a bad album, it is a bad album that most
Sigur Ros fans had already heard before it was
released. Most bands play their songs live before
they are relased on an album, but take the time in the
studio to develop and experiment with those songs.
Not so with ().
() is far and away the most disappointing album of the
year.
