i used ImpulseTracker probably more than anything thusfar in making music, and i'd have to agree that the freedoms of that interface over a step sequencer is far more conducive to writting "idm" beats. the major problem i came across with IT though was the overall production value. because it's all sample-based and not synthesized in any way, the quality of sound has everything to do with the quality of the samples. if you don't have access to good samples or equipment/softsynths to make your own, you're at the mercy of borrowing from other trackers and using samples recycled a thousand times over, likely made way back in the day when small file size was paramount for modem-powered bbs distribution. you can post produce everything if you really want to, writing out the individual tracks (channels in reference to trackers) to .wav, tweaking levels and then multitracking the whole thing back together with something like SF Acid, but it's a real pain in the ass. or of course, you could be into that washed out and often empty, flat sound. was never really happy with Buzz, and just about every other tracker (ScreamTracker, FastTracker) are really sub-par compared to IT. i eventually moved on to primarily cutting up beats with ReCycle and Dr. Rex'ing them into Reason. word has it that they're still working on IT v.3, but that's been something like 6 years in the making, bouncing from code monkey to code monkey to no avail. from the specs i saw on what they wanted to achieve with that, it would likely be a really phat platform for producing idm if it ever saw the light of day. all this info gleaned from my stint with the tracking group pHluid (http://phluid.acid.org/) as :m. zero. i still have a bunch of tracks i did in IT post-pHluid up at http://posthoc.org/anonbox/ if anyone would like to check them out. :mz // anonbox · http://posthoc.org/ | http://ecesis.org/ 'if there were two of you, which one would win?' --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
