My wife I and Irove down to San Mateo for lunch today, specifically to go to "Annapoorna" south indian vegetarian on el camino (east side, just south of 92). It's the 2nd time in 4 days. Saw their ad in "India Currents" and had to try it ~ the only other south indian restaurants nearby are all in the east bay. They make a killer dosa. If you haven't had one, go NOW and have one!!! A dosa is a rice-flour crepe grilled golden brown and crispy like the outside of a grilled cheese sandwhich, stuffed with potato/lentil/onion filling like a samosa. IT comes with sour/hot sambar dal soup and a minty coconut dip that is just heaven. You rip off pieces like ethiopian food and dip it in the two sauces. Mmmmmmm. There are several varieties. The "masala dosa" is the default classic. A "Rava masala dosa" uses fermented rice flour which gives the batter a delish nutty savoriness ~ my current favorite! The "mysore" variety has a spicy hot tomatoe paste spread on the inside -- my other favorite. My wife tried their spring dosa today ~ it had more veggies on the inside and also had the mysore style paste. Mmmmmmm. Other things to try ~ their uthapam, haven't had it yet but they're savory rice pancakes that taste alot like potato pancakes or latkas. Mmmmmmm. Also comes with savory dipping stuff. Vada are savory chickpea flour donuts. Mmmmm. Why these things haven't taken over the US like burrito shacks I have no idea. It's got to happen, they just nail too many current US culinary desires. Starch, fat, spicey, savory. Mmm. Still excited to have found good dosas nearby, next time I try their thali (assortment plate), aaron ghede@well.com http://www.quietamerican.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
