Why is telefon tel aviv "idm"... Aren't they just making music? Honestly, if we're gonna insist on using "idm" as a genre, shouldn't we decide on exactly what the genre is? I mean, there are so many artists and styles under that one umbrella term that it really is meaningless. Therefore, it is meaningless to say it's dead... Given that 'idm' grew out of the early Warp AI series sound, which Autechre now sounds nothing like, and Telefon Tel Aviv are nothing like either the early AI sound or recent Autechre, how are all of these things 'idm'? No wonder the MTV kiddies get confused about all this stuff... at least indie rawk has a relatively coherent sound such that the unofficial moniker has some semblance of a meaning when you say it to someone. I could tell you I like idm and you might think I mean Lali Puna when in fact I mean Merzbow ... sheesh! Let's get some cultural coherence and agreement going on so we can all stop making statements like 'idm is dead' without meaning something! BTW, I mean none of this. --- rw <rw@goldengate.net> wrote:
