One word: Publicists
Lots of people do really good work in semi-obscurity. To do better than that
you must do some really careerist things, like hiring a publicist. It also
helps if you learn not to badmouth people who stand to help you. You'd
be surprised how many 'wannabes' spend a lot of time dissing established
artists. It is possible to burn bridges.
