I've stealthily avoided all the above, though I like Steve Reich. I wish
there were more techno like 'music for xx musicians' (I'm not sure what you
call that polyrhythmic stuff with layers building up to enormous complexity,
something like an Ae track in reverse :-) ).

That was invented by John Chowning, who was at UC Berkely at the time I
think. He did indeed patent it and license it to Yamaha, but as far as I
recall he was a professor of acoustics or music at the time (late 60s).
