Actually, it did exist at this time... but it was a vastly different beast
than the modern piano. One incarnation of these ancestors of the piano is
called "pianoforte".
Mozart's works for keyboard were composed for the piano, not the
harpsichord. I think that the harpsichord was already beginning its slow
decline into oblivion at this point, but don't quote me on that.
