A joke in that I find it hard to believe she was hanging out at Rephresh nights or
was even aware of them for that matter.

That's pretty much it, but to me "electronica" represents that sort of middle of the
road, "what exactly is this ?" crap like Crystal Method, Fatboy Slim, etc.. That sort
of mid-tempo breakbeats with acid lines, rock masquerading as dance music garbage
that was getting attention in the US at the height of "electronica's" success 2 or 3
years ago. Not that I was trying to say that's what influenced Madonna's music. I
guess I was trying to say her music became more overtly electronic and went beyond
just using average sort of synth stuff. You know what I mean.
