Yeah, U2's been doing lots of electronic stuff at least since
Zooropa. And I respect them for it, they could've easily just spent
the last decade making Joshua Tree Volumes 1-7 and been rolling in
the dough, but instead they've been doing much more interesting
things.
Bono's been sporting a very hyperslick night-clubby image for quite
a while, also - the whole "Fly" thing.
Just to be fair, I'm not positive that they beat Madonna to the
punch, though - the synths on her 80's stuff don't really count since
everyone else was doing it then also, but she's been a pretty big
proponent of remixes and 12" club singles pretty much forever. I'm
sure you've heard the stereotypes about what they play in gay clubs
when they're not playing Donna Summers - Madonna has tons of house
remixes. Not that giving Armand Van Helden tons of cash is
necessarily a good thing for the history of electronic music, but
she's undoubtedly done so.
And going back further, the whole vogueing thing was also taken
from early 90's New York black gay house culture, so she's been
following electronic music for years. At least one of the guys in
that video was in a documentary style video, I think it was "Tongues
Untied" by Marlon Riggs, or maybe it was "Paris Is Burning" by
someone else.... I forget, it was a class on the other side of
summer. Madonna just seems to prefer to have other people make her
music decent through remixing them, she puts the bland saltines
cracker versions on the albums so they're accessible to everyone.
Man - defending Madonna's claim to importance in electronic music?
I must be aching to be banished from this lunch table.... 8^) It
would have been so much fun if Aphex and the Rephlex crew had
acquiesced and remixed her stuff when she was begging them to,
hanging around Rephresh night and such. DMX Krew could have done it
and made the stuff so much better, not to mention what a spoonful of
Bogdan could do.

Radiohead are
admittedly very influenced by, are like the most uncool band to like.
