To counter, there are a number of new USB audio devices on the market that
can be used with any USB enabled laptop (any new pc or mac laptop). The best
of the crop looks to be the Tascam USB-428 which has two stereo 24bit
digital outs and a digital in and some analogue inputs. Its got a bunch of
faders and eq knobs too, and all this for around $500. I've heard mixed
reviews, some of which say the latency is really bad, but I have yet to get
mine yet. Roland makes a slightly cheaper unit with only 16bit quality and a
built in fx processor, but it lacks the eq knobs and midi control.
