i think mauver is definitely top notch, especially like the rhymes on side
1a -- definitely some very original production styles involved
music is a rotted one note definitely has its moments, probably about 75% of
the way there but at times i think TJ has just opted to do a bit of a piss
take, not that it doesn't sound great even when he's taking it. the
subsequent ep's all shine to me though ... i think it's a great thing for an
artist to be able to reinvent their style whenever they want, and it's
definitely indicative of the integrity of record labels like Warp that they
would permit one of their star acts to take such a veering left turn ... at
the same time I think nobody drops the beats like squarepusher so it's good
to see him return to the more dance-oriented styles on Selection 16.
Although I wish he had stayed a bit more left-field in the vein of Maximum
Priest ... there are a couple tracks on there that merge his more dancey
style with sounds that you won't find on any other dance record (mic'd drum
kits, weird non-Akai approved loops, etc.). That said, Dedicated Loop is
the HOTTEST track i've heard from TJ in forever and it's no wonder you hear
it on the BBC during commercial breaks...
when an artist of Jenkinson's skill goes experimental and veers off the
track for a while, it can only add to the pallette that they bring to their
craft, i think this is definitely evidenced by both Maximum Priest and
Selection 16.
