You what?!?!?! You just picked this up!? How? Where? When? What? I've known people who would almost literally KILL for this release.
Don't tell me it's been released on CD???
Anyway, Monoton (Konrad Backer) made some amazing avant-Basic Chanel-ish records before teaming up with DJ Dano (oh gawd) and
going all gabber in the late eighties, early nineties. This one (MonotonProdukt 07) is his best - four sides worth of subsonic bass lines
and bleeps, eerie, dreamy, funny, all great. Before this, there's a single album MonotonProdukt 02 (also from 1981; blue sleeve, similar in
design to the black 07), with a similar sound, though a bit more simple. There's a 7" called 'Ich weiss nichts' (MonotonProdukt 03 - 1980),
which is more krautrocky. His third album (no cat no., white sleeve) from 1989 has it's moments, but is nowhere near the genius of the
earlier two. After that, I sort of lost track (& interest) - he made at least two singles with Dano, and did one track on a Mokum (uh oh)
sampler or compilation called 'If answering machines could talk', which was okay if you played it 33 rpm instead of 45.
All the missing MonotonProdukt numbers are most likely to be cassettes - if anyone has any of them, pleeeaaaaase let me know - I'd
HAVE to hear them.
Bye,
Maarten
