Hmmm...there's probably a reason why there exists on the one hand fictional books (poems, novels, short-stories) and on the other hand non-fictional (essays, academic litterature etc.). The moment a novel, or in this case a piece of music, decides to become explicit in the sense that they choose one specific political theme (Bosnia, Tibet...), there is a clear & present danger (heh!) that the theme takes control over the piece of art itself. It becomes so important for the artist to "save the world" that he or she looses sight for what art really should be (in my and, if I understand him correctly, Harold Blooms opinion): source for insight, and not a microphone for a capital-letter manifesto. Simplification (but still part of my point): Why did Sartre and Foucault participate in rallies and protest-marches? They were both very competent (!) writers, so wouldn't a book be enough to put the wrongs into rights?

I'm not condoning (sp?) anyone's sincere intentions, it's just their means to their ends I'm doubting. When you copy or put together your mix tapes, you're not politically motivated in doing do so. When Black Dog decides to make music about Tibet, they're focusing their music towards one specific, political agenda. They stand the *risk* of Tibet standing in the way of their music, you don't. I decided to join Amnesty International instead of making some kind of musical statement about prisoners of conscience. This is my way of doing things, others have other ways. If they think music or art in general is the way to do it, fine; I don't. Think about it: How many people do you know who's actually been motivated to act after listening to a piece of music or reading a novel? And how many people listening to music does *not* know about Tibet?
