Sorry to barge in like this, considering i've been off this list for a
while, but didn't Brian Behlendorf suggested MPEG as the standard for audio
on hyperreal? Also, compressed AIFF are a pain on any other platform than Mac,
while compressed (ADPCM) wav can be played on all platforms (on PC just
by using media player, and for Mac, there is a player on stanford). On data
CD technology (like CD-i, CDROM etc...) ADPCM .wav is what is used and
sometimes MPEG (much more used for video) to compress audio, so i would
suggest one or the other instead of those horrible sounding .au files.
For MPEG, one has to consider what bitrate will be used, and from that, what
level (1, 2 or 3) of the MPEG 1 audio support will be used. With level 3, one
can get the same file size as .au, but with very high fidelity. It does take
over an hour to compress a complete song on a machine without DSP however.
Level 1 can be done in realtime.
For ADPCM, it always yield 4:1 compression, but it can be done aon a 22KHz
file instead of 44KHz, so it will give 8:1, which is almost as small as u-law
.au files, but with a much higher quality (level 2 mpeg-1 type of quality
for that type of bitrate). 44KHz adpcm gives equivalent results to level
3 mpeg-1 on the same type of bitrate, but is realtime in opposition to
mpeg. The shear number of platforms that can do realtime ADPCM encoding
and decoding would suggest we use this, but if we want to go with 16:1
compression rates instead of 8:1 then MPEG level 3 is the only way to
achieve this. Note that a pentium 90 is required to play realtime an MPEG
file with a full level3 decoding.
