In the center panel of the CD insert of the Terre Thaemlitz cd... There is a message. it reads : "Always : Use Condoms Use Dental Dams Use Finger Caps Use Water Based Lubricant Rinse Needles With Bleach And Water Communicate Have Fun" Now...initially, i was just plain offended. Just who does this guy think his audience is? What percentage of his audience shoots up? Not me... And does he think I go around screwing every scummy woman i come in contact with? I dont even know what a finger cap is!..it must be one of those things that the postal people use to sort envelopes...and why the hell do i need a dental dam? Does he assume i do the things that would require me to need one (trying to be non vulgar) Secondly...if i need a condom, a dental dam, a finger cap, and i need to be concerned about whether or not this girl has washed her needles with bleach and water ...i am going to communicate something alright... im going to communicate that sex with her would be no fun... so i will just give her the water based lubricant that has been for some reason required of me and walk out the door. Really...if you have to take that many precautions, dont you think you should take a bit more time to get to know the person first? Is it sex or some sort of equipment demonstration? geez. But mostly im just plain offended by the presumptious nature of the inserts message. I am a monogamous type of guy. I am in a loving relationship in which i am completely happy. I have no desire to do anything that would require the use of thse items from me. (Well...maybe all but the first...) To that some would respond "well...then the insert was not talking too you." But i submit that it was..i am however the consumer, and i have after all, purchased this product. therefore it is talking to me simply because i own and am now reading the item. I think it is bad marketing, and furthermore, not musically related...(kind of like this post) I think he Thaemlitz should have been more careful in determining what types of people make up his audience. Am i to think that the people who listen to this music are debaucherous drug shooter uppers who like sex both ways...or what? It would be like this... what if the insert said : "Always : Shave Your Head Before Applying Swastika Tattoo Look For Police When Beating Black People Senseless Never Pull A gun On An Old Lady Unless She Is Strong Enough To Keep Holding On To Her Purse. Remember To Slap Little Kids At Random Use Water Based Lubricant Communicate Have Fun" what would you think if you read this? That either thaemlitz thought his audience was into this...or that thaemlitz was into this....or that he has a twisted sense of humor...like me...(hell i came up with that) Maybe that was not a great example...but i do think that these nifty little message should be found in places other than cd inserts. Which i guess i could have said in the beginning and left it at that...but hey...that wouldnt have been any fun. jasonosaj (has noow fallen backwards from his soapbox)

Hmmm.. Brother Alphabet got quite overly concerned about Terre's CD insert. So overly that he compared it to giving suggestions of being a fascist skinhead, a racist, and a thief. Well, Jason, it's not THAT bad... relative to you, maybe... since perhaps you are a right-winger?? See, Terre is promoting safe sex, and also the right to free drug use, so it seems. He believes not only in lots of freedom (freedom to ingest whatever drug you wish), but also in being safe with these freedoms. He is not some crazy careless nazi-lover going around beating up black people, robbing old ladies, and slapping kids!! You've twisted it completely! You must look at beliefs in themselves, not compare them to others, as is what you did by making these exaggerated comparisons. About not being musically related: It's not a requirement! The ideas in the lyrics of so many songs are not musically related. Songs can be political, emotional, or nonsense. There are plenty of songs expressing the suggestion of legalization of certain drugs. Are you offended by love songs which talk about love and not music?? Geez. Printed material on CDs is also an expression of the artist. It's his/her right via the First. About targeted audience: No, just cause you bought the CD doesn't mean you have to "always" use those things... Give me a break. How easy are you to be influenced? Don't you have a brain of your own to take input selectively? Choose what you like and agree with, and recognize what you dislike and disagree with, but don't go around preaching what should and shouldn't be expressed. A great man once said: "I may not like what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Besides, didn't you buy the CD mainly for the music? Or do you buy CDs for the politically correct inserts they come with? -djkc

Presumably, you don't give a damn about people who might be helped by this message. YAASA. STFU. Get out of my sight before I puke on you. Jason, Congratulations on your Columbia Records scam. That was an inspired idea, whomever suggested it to you. I only hope that the poor guy who took the records in at the store (and who probably makes $4.50/hour) doesn't get held responsible when someone determines that the store can't get credit for them. Now, as for your other diatribe, *ahem*. Perhaps Mississippi really *is* the cultural backwater that popular opinion would have us believe; you know, racism, incestuous inbreeding, etc. :-) At any rate, I find it hard to believe that in the last 10 years or so, you have never had occasion to encounter (via the media or otherwise) the Black Plague of the 20th Century, namely AIDS. Well, I have news for you. It's not just for Homosexuals, intravenous drug (ab)users and Haemophiliacs anymore. My own mother-in-law - who qualified as "(d) None of the above", btw - was felled by AIDS last year. It was NOT A PRETTY SIGHT, y'know? Anyway, since it doesn't seem to be obvious to you, I'll enlighten you: what Terre is talking about is essentially "The Canonical Guide to AIDS prevention". In this day and age, how anyone can take such vitally crucial advice and consider it a personal affront is beyond my feeble capacities, I'm afraid. If you don't feel that you are in a risk category for AIDS, then feel free to ignore Terre's sensible advice. But please, do not take it as a personal insult. The importance of Terre's message cannot be overstated. ObIDM: Just bought Analogue Bubblebath IV and the Global Communication. Yay! (No review yet, I just woke up (-: ) - Greg

Well - *i* make up his audience. It seems to me he cares about his audience, otherwise he wouldn't have given this note of precaution, no? *Ól•Ó½Ó!!!!!Þ6°!!!!!! Think!!! It aint illegal yet!!!! bleep...bleep...(what is that noize!) bleep.....transmat@teleport.com

Assuming I'm part of this high-risk audience that knows nothing of proper precautions, how do I know I can TRUST this guy? Do you know what would happen if *everyone* took stock in the preaching that goes on inside CD inserts? How much you may agree with what is being said has nothing to do with whether or not someone else should accept it on blind faith. Another thing is the cryptic nature of the advice, obviously intended to be very stylish. You take a finger cap and a dental dam, there are various things you can do with them, all with their own safety:annoyance ratio, and certain activities, the safety is not worth the annoyance to some people. (You figure it out.) I find it a little fishy that instead of printing the risk factors for various undertakings under various conditions, this guy saw fit to equalize everything with blanket statements and the word "always". No thanks. einexile in rhythm and sorrow
