From: Sven Venema <S.Venema@cit.gu.edu.au> To: idm@techno.Stanford.EDU Subject: Reviews I picked up two excellent records lately and I thought I'd do a little review of them. I haven't seen either of these Eps reviewed before, but they're good enough to be reviewed twice in any case :) -- Neuropolitique : Menage a' trois Irdial-Discs Tracks: Can't Get Off The Slide No Feet On Stage Menage a' Trois Idiotic Lantern Report Faze Express Triangle This is probably my favourite Ep for the year so far, it's got a very clean and flowing sound, but the tunes are twisted and off the wall. Some of the twisted sounds that Matt Cogger (Neuropolitique) uses remind me a bit of sounds that Orlando Voorn might use. I wouldn't classify any of the tracks on this Ep as 'sane' tracks, they're all twisted in some way, and it's twisted in a good way too :). The tracks build up fairly well, and I usually find that I'm chair bopping when I listen to it. Menage a' Trois is the most dance-able track on the Ep, but it's still very much IDM, just a bit more high energy than the other tracks. There's lots of percussion, and those D-Jax style tubular sounding high-hats make an appearance as well. I really like every single track on this Ep,it's something that I'll be playing for a long long time to come. Give it a listen if you see it, it's probably not to everyone's taste, but I LOVE it :) -- YO3 : The Deep Sleep Ep General Production Recordings : genp(x)22 Tracks: Deep Sleep Scramble Liquid Flow No More Lies This is another record that I will play for a long time to come, all four tracks are good. There's no major deviation from the GPR style, lots of interesting drum patterns, strange piano-y noises and squelchy sounds. It's a fairly mellow Ep for the most part, although it's not ambient by any means. But there are some nice long beatless breaks in a couple of the tracks, especially Deep Sleep. A large part of No More lies is entirely beatless, it just has a piano-y tune playing and gradually more and more sounds are added until there's a really cruisy track that flows beautifully. Part of the Deep Sleep track reminds me of the Orb's little fluffy clouds for some reason, it could be because they use a similar sound though... :) My favourite track on the Ep is Scramble. This is my favourite track for 94 so far. It starts off with a distorted Bwaummmm kind of sound, has drums added to it to make it a cruisy kind of 'walking' track, and then breaks down into a beautiful track. There's a synthy noise that comes in that does something to me everytime I hear it. Some metallic tapping noises are added and the rest of the track comes back in. Very very nice :) If you like Ken Ishii then you might want to check this Ep out, it's a similar kind of style, sort of :) Cheers, Sven. -- "My words have turned to meat," said the vegetarian and shut his mouth. ___ ___ __ ___ ___ __ (__ ( ) (__ | | (__ | | | |__| ___) \/ (___ | | (___ | | | | | @kurango.cit.gu.edu.au "It's not my problem..."

Hmmm, i don't agree. Orlando doesn't really sound as original as Matt Cogger i think. Matt sounds much weirder. Orlando's album 'Roomservice' by The Living Room is OK btw. For everybody interested in IDM/house from the Netherlands: New Electronica/Beechwood are about to release a CD/LP called 'The Lowlands' featuring 100% Pure, Edge Of Motion, Stefan Robbers and more (Orlando Voorn?, Speedy J?). A 12" with Pure & Edge Of Motion has already been released (on clear vinyl!) and it's very good, dancable IDM......
