keyboard magazine, etc First of all, remember that Keyboard is a mainstream magazine that wants to sell lots of copies to keyboard professionals. Now realize that the majority of keyboards are NOT sold to techno artists. We're way outnumbered by rock bands, country bands, lounge singers, etc. Techno is a fractional minority. We're not important. Now, it's amazing enough that Keyboard even bothered to talk about us at all. And while I'm personally bummed that they wasted more column inches on already-popular-enough bands like AFX and Orbital, it's hardly surprising. Obviously the majority of that article came from an interview done at the NASA See The Light stop in San Francisco. Same thing happened back when they (keyboard) did their "cyberpunk" issue and interviewed "big" bands like Front Line Assembly. I bet the angry letters in next month's letter column will be eerily reminiscent of that whole deal as well. Just get used to it. Mainstream press coverage of IDM will never change. Oh, and speaking of press/IDM... watch for a forthcoming interview with Future Sound Of London in the pages of WIRED magazine. Apparently FSOL are totally excited about doing this one as they feel that WIRED is one of the few rags with anything useful to say. Also, consider that people making techno aren't likely to be buying new products made by Keyboard's advertisers -- the sample-playback synths that account for the majority of ads in a publication like Keyboard hold little allure for most techno musicians. Yes, we are, but wouldn't you consider the producers of avant-garde/experimental classical music (musique concrete, et al) equally as fractional a minority? I think that the only difference, in this case, is that the above is academically respected, so it is afforded the opportunity to express itself in a public forum (however mainstream it may be) such as Keyboard Magazine, whereas our genre wasn't borne out of (nor did it ever require any approval or assistance from) academia. Our music seems to be a (popular?) cultural phenomenon, and I think they're a bit reluctant to acknowledge new culture.

Oh, I'm smokin' it alright! ;) Hey, not to change the subject too quickly or anything - but I didn't want to waste another posting.. You seem to know the people @ Exist Dance pretty well - I was told that there was some kind of article featured in Urb which stated that Exist Dance had broken up.. Is there any truth to this? I apologize if this is redundant subject matter - I missed it the first time around. Thanks, Darshan

Well, here's what I know at least... Mike and Tyler have moved up to Lopez Island, WA and are continuing to work... So I guess the original pair have split but Exist Dance still, er, exists... Peace, Matt <(hcy)>

So does Single Cell Orchestra, and Young American Primative.. I think that anyone who thinks "all" techno artists prefer and buy old analog exclusivly are kidding themselves. For most of us, it is a cleaver mix of both.

Techno has evolved faster than any other music form in the history of music. In its hayday I've heard from english record store owers that they recieved over 1,000 12" per week. (1988-1991) Calculate that out and that's a lot of music. (mostly crap sure. but so is the majority of 'pop' music) It is a minority, however, it has a been incredibly prolific.
