PRAISES of ON follow. . . aphex twin ON-WARP logo side outer track ON (33rpms +8)/file under-Beautiful booooomeR/closest relative-green calx piano raindrops ease you into a heart wrenching riff. . .just when things are about to turn too mushy (for some) thunder claps and tk,tk,tk,tk, booom! here come the stuttering beats. . .(yet again widening the gap between the norm and the twin). . .this track hops along cycling through delayed piano drops and a cast of curious vocal samples. . .(who dat?). . .the multiple tinkerings make this one headphone candy. . .heading full steam into uncharted waters. . .ready about. . .hard to lee logo side inner track YIPS (45rpms -8)/file under-brutal breakdown/closest relative-iketa heads up kids. . .yip, yip, yip, boooooom. . .this one holds up nicely to other hard techno gems (like REPLAY). . .quick enough for the floor but grander than most hardcore. . .with as much attack. . .chock full of break downs. . .nobody breaks down a track like rich. . .holding up the assault for a slitsecond for the dancers to freeze. . .bam. . .back in nice sonic hoverings. . .a bpm gobstopper. . .suck on this polyrhythm print side outer track D-SCAPE (33rpms +8)/file under-3D trance/closest relative-quino aquatic vocals and deep groove etches characterize this track that should turn some tranceomaniac heads. . .leaving the kick solo, rich concentrates on sneaking in spooky samples and evolving the soundtracky (Carpenteresque) mood. . .this song scares me. . .several times i took off my headphones and answered "yea?!" to people calling for my attention only to remember that i was home alone. . .scary print side inner track XEPHA (33rpms -8)/file under-synco dub/closest relative-AB3 mono dub track i'm giving this track HEAVY rotation. . .a chirping 303ish intro. . . fog horny (ha!) callings. . .and a killer bass line. . .the closest i could describe it is like King Kong hopping around sliffed up like mad ch,ch,ch KOOOOOONG! KONG KONG KU KONG!. . .nightmarish beasts growl and rich drops the bomb of a beat into the caustic bucket. . .kerrrploosh! no questions asked. . .this is dub. . .more soundtracky tops. . .polypoly polyrhythm . . .step way off. . .way out. . .and points for the reprise ouch! gurgle. . .click aphex twin remixes-ON WARP logo side outer track D-SCAPE MIX (33rpms -8)/file under-tribal vibe/close. rel.-caustic J5 this one is a real treat. . .surely like nothing you have ever heard before tribal dub. . .rich is chomping at the bit here. . .the vibe work out is classic aphex and will etch itself into your brain permanently. . .more stretched vocal samples. . .this goes off. . .i've been feeding this one my ummagumma (several-furry-grooving-etc) and the kingside inner track of caustic window j5 is a perfect companion. . .we got this live in Boston logo side inner track RELOAD MIX (33rpms +0)/file under-jiffy pump/closest relative-biosphere shades of reloads previous work signal the intro. . .these kids have a knack for shooting the moon with epic building intro's but not without leaving you a way home riding the pumping beats. . .a good mid track jam teases you into thinking its said and done for. . .but they'll be back. . . and take you out the way you came in. . .nice stuff here print side outer track MU-ZIG MIX (33rpms +0)/file under-dust mix/closest relative-afx ON mu-zig retains the finest parts of the original here but not without a bit of interprative extras. . .the drums here sound like loose flam snares but are clearly electronic and distorted. . .good craftmanship here. . . saving and triggering the same piano from the original but adding a different rhythm. . .replacing aphexs triple shot with one delayed booom every two cycles. . .and even a bit of improvising using a clip of the original piano. . .again signs of clever craftmanship. . .good closure 28 MIX (33 ?)/file under-eraser head/closest relative-david lynch surreal. . .ambient excursion. . .sounds like sqeezing noise through the pinched neck of a balloon. . .spoooky. . .monumental monstor music
