(this is going to the idm list and to the tangerine dream list)
While Christopher Franke's limited edition not-sold-in-stores KLEMANIA
album isn't to me the "Return to the Classic Tangerine Dream Sound" some
are heralding it to be, I did manage to happen across a new intelligent
dance music EP on R & S Records that *does* capture the spirit of the 1974-
83 Dream in a major way.
David Morley : THE SHUTTLE EP
R&S Records RS 93030 (UK 12", probably on CD also) [Dec 1993]
5 tracks; I don't have the titles in front of me. I'm wondering if this is
maybe some kind of secret Edgar Froese side project. Too embarrassed to
release something that is more like his early solo material than his
current Tangerine Dream output, Froese must have assumed the name David
Morley and signed to the successful trance label R&S. Well, regardless of
who did this EP, I'm nuts about it. Beautiful sweeps with lots of 'verb,
smooth TR-606/TR-808 percussion that's not overemphasized, Moog solos, mood
and melody... powerful, powerful stuff.
The first two tracks are in the i.d.m. vein, somewhat percussion oriented
though not to an extreme, and are the most listenable examples of the genre
I've ever heard. The other 3 tracks are more ambient. Two of them are
along the lines of the 1982 albums "Logos Live" and Froese's "Kamikaze
1989" soundtrack, with bits of mid-70s Dream thrown in. The other one is a
less melodic piece is a cut-up of the chimes of Big Ben given as many
electronic treatments as anything the Aphex Twin could muster, with a
throbbing bass noise guaranteed to make any drunks in the room throw up.
Maybe that's not the best way to end a review. How about this: Tangerine
Dream fans longing for the "good old days", BUY THIS RECORD NOW!
