Stupid (elemental) question: Just what are good starting points for this 'intelligent' stuff? I've recently bought: Surfing on Sine Waves, Electro-Soma (B12) and The 4th Sign (CJ Bolland). I've got my eyes on: that Black Dog LP, Selected Ambient Works, and the Speedy J (Ginger) LP I've had some other ambient stuff for a while (Chill out, Space, Ultraworld, Uf-orb etc..) (Blasphemy follows) I was disappointed with the Polygon Window stuff. Being a home-built electronic music person myself, I found interviews with him far more interesting than the music... Oh well! john.. -- <<ATARIstCASIOht700KORGex800ROLANDsh2tr606cr8000YAMAHApf10dx7ii>> Evolving

those are all good starting points, although i wouldn't rank any of them among my favorites.

selected ambient works is really nice although if you were bored with Surfing On Sine Waves you'll probably be bored with it too. i haven't heard all of the Speedy J yet but what I have heard is excellent.

yeah, i've never really understood why everyone makes this big deal about afx making his own sounds - they don't sound particularly different or innovative to me, and i have a lot of experience in the studio. anyway, i'd recommend Future Sound Of London as your next move. either the "accelerator" album or their new Amorphous Androgynous "Tales Of Ephidrena" project.
