I just put this on while reading the review. Nothing personal but pretty much everything in this review feels hilariously wrong. "Seemingly operating on a whole other conceptual level where chaos and disorder reign, their music is very much in the experimental realm and appears to be a random selection of electronic sounds thrown together haphazardly with no apparent consideration for structure or design." When I listen to it the structure seems obvious. They may use random processes for elements of their music but it's never haphazard or arbitrary. I do think they make their pieces by jamming on Max patches live, but that means every switchup, every knob tweak is done by human hands live. Maybe something completely unlike one's expectations for music sounds random and arbitrary to you. There are two parts to listening to Autechre: Experiencing it without preconceptions as a sensual experience, and finding the musical thread of it. It can be a challenge to understand and appreciate, but it's as worthy as a pastime. And with repeated listening, it becomes familiar and makes a different sort of sense. Can anyone make some recommendations in this "Haphazard Sounds" genre? It sounds pretty cool actually. Aside from say field recordings at NYC Grand Central Station. Seems like the trick is to have "no apparent" structure or design on first or Nth listen, but then one that becomes "apparent" on listen N+1... a nice reward for repeated, deep listening! There's a parking ramp in Iowa City that for some reason has a loud, harsh 60 cycle electrical hum, and some kind of blower with an out of round squirrel cage fan that makes metallic banging aperiodic noises. I've parked and then been transfixed by how much it sounds like things I've heard at basement noise shows. That is arbitrary, directionless, but also has structure. Any time actual human musicians play, there's always an intention in what they do, and even without traditional musical structure, it has meaning. And if you listen to a recording more than once, things about it become familiar. Because the human mind seeks to find meaning in noise, the seemingly arbitrary sequence of musical events and sounds comes to have a meaning, once your expectations are tuned into it. Unless you're familiar with the conventions of any musical style, it will seem to have no apparent structure or meaning. My younger brother, a classical violinist with no use for any sort of popular music, came to hear me play techno, and his review was "it was very loud and all sounded the same." Every kind of music requires a different kind of listening. You can learn to appreciate unfamiliar music by learning what expectations more experienced listeners have for that style.

Network Glass is pretty solidly in this sphere.. https://norentrecords.bandcamp.com/album/laugh-now-laugh-later-norent003 https://reservematinee.bandcamp.com/album/tired-stupid The promo for his first couple cassettes expressed very explicit intentions to disregard as much compositional convention/narrative interpretation as possible. I think the method changes from release to release, but I'm pretty sure some of his stuff has been mostly assembled from the sounds made by external hard drives, other stuff from code he wrote to trigger audiofiles randomly from giant directories full of disparate recordings, or pulling from livestreams on Twitch or online game lobby chatter.

No Rent is a pretty exciting label that I try to follow - - for Bandcamp Friday they've got their digital discography selling for 7 bucks! Insane deal. The Network Glass records are indeed really good (although his best one IMO is the collab with Jason Crumer which is on another label). IDM heads might dig the side B of the Thirdorgan release, Faster Detail, KK Null and Crown Of Cerberus, all on No Rent. Other No Rent highlights for me - Developer, J. Soliday, and Universal Cell Unlock - all on a Noise tip. Vanessa Rossetto's release is great too. I really can't think of proper unstructured "Haphazard sounds" release that take advantage of both the huge soundbanks offered by the web, cheap data storage, and easy to use programming languages to cut up and arrange samples quickly and randomly. Maybe my ear's all fucked up from listening to noise and electroacoustic stuff but the Network Glass stuff feels pretty tightly arranged (even if the source material is fairly random). I'm glad the NG stuff was mentioned - good excuse to revisit some interesting music. Cheers! Happy bandcamp friday everyone.
