Sensory Effect presents OSCILLATE-- tuesdays at The Baltic Room--1207 pine st. Seattle WA 9p 21+ $12 with residents GREG SKIDMORE and ELECTROSECT Tue. March 7 we are proud to welcome RICHARD DEVINE (live--schematic, warp records-ATL) THE FLASHBULB (live--rephlex, sublight, alphabasic records) CYLOB (dj set--rephlex records-UK) MIKE LAKEMAN (dj set-sounding depth radio-SEA) here's a little about our performers.... RICHARD DEVINE is an Atlanta-based electronic musician. He is recognised for producing a layered and heavily processed sound, combining influences from old and modern electronic music. Devine largely records for the Miami-based Schematic Records. As a result of praise of his music from Autechre as well as a remix of Aphex Twin's Come To Daddy, Devine recorded an album for Warp Records which was jointly released by Schematic and Warp. Devine first started using computers for composition around 1993. Don Hasslier, a professor at the Atlanta College of Art, got him interested in computer synthesis, introducing Devine to CSound and other powerful computer-based applications. Devine also coded a couple FFT applications in SuperCollider, an environment and programming language for real-time audio synthesis. “It’s interesting, because you’re doing things to sound that just aren’t physically possible.” Devine also uses Native Instruments (NI) software. His favorite NI applications are Reaktor and Absynth. Reaktor is a very powerful modular system, similar in many respects to classic modular synthesizer systems. Devine has also designed sound patches for NI’s Absynth. He has also scored commercials for Nike and Touchstone Pictures, and engineered and performed his own music worldwide THE FLASHBULB The Flashbulb is one of the many trade names of Benn Jordan, an eccentric and shockingly diverse recording artist that has dominated the underground of electronic music for years. Jordan was and is arguably a key figure in the job of redefining and pioneering new landmarks in computer-based music, and many listeners and artists agree that he is one of the most talented electronic musicians of the generation. Rather than aiming to make strange sounds, Jordan seems to base most his impressively large collection of written material (a discography that surpasses 30 known releases as of 2003) on the ingredients that make emotional and beautiful music. His personality seems as diverse as his music. In 1993 Jordan's first electronic recordings were only sold with supplements of LSD, he releases music under many 'secret aliases' that he refuses to publicly identify, he claims to enjoy writing music overnight in elevators, and he has most recently been found promoting controversial electronic music shows for a dog. Just as Benn may be the worst publicist in the world, his lacking qualities can be easily forgiven by his talents, be it in guitar playing, sitar playing, computer sequencing, or just plain raw talent. CYLOB Another product of Richard "Aphex Twin" James' Rephlex stable, Chris Jeffs' releases as Cylob and Kinesthesia have numbered among the Cornwall-based imprint's most celebrated recent releases. Not nearly as prolific as his friends and sometime-labelmates James and Mike Paradinas (µ-Ziq), Jeffs has nonetheless amassed an impressive catalog of releases in a relatively short period of time. Although he only began experimenting with electronics in 1991, within five years Jeffs released three EPs and three full-lengths -- including the cheeky DJ double-pack Loops and Breaks (as Cylob) and the sparse ambient of Empathy Box (as Kinesthesia) -- in addition to remixes for Aphex Twin, Bochum Welt, and Immersion. Although focusing more recently on a refined brand of ambient breakbeat and techno, Jeffs' stylistic palette includes crunchy, industrial-leaning techno, beatless ambient, and new-school electro-funk MIKE LAKEMAN is the host of SOUNDING DEPTH radio and avid collector of electronic music and related forms. His tastes are legendary and his record collection deep. Mike is also an integral figure in the annual Decibel Festival, helping organize interenet streaming and artist interface. His contributions to Seattle's electronic community cannot be overstated. His radio show and blog can be found here at http://soundingdepth.blogspot.com/ --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Bring photos to life! New PhotoMail makes sharing a breeze.

In the (unlikely) event that Iowa City is closer to you than any of the other cities on this tour, Cylob/Devine/Flashbulb will be playing here Saturday March 4. In the (equally unlikely) event you want to drive here for the show, you will thrill to be in the storied venue Gabes Oasis, home of the most disgusting bathrooms this side of a Turkish prison... and I can probably find someone to put you up for the night. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
