Kims, OtherMusic, and Etherea don't have it... OM ran out a month ago and didn't seem to have an intention of reordering... ?!?!?!?!!?!?!? that's a pretty amazing sounding release, and yeah, doesn't even seem to get the time of day... what gives?

wtf is a spaghetti monster? the answer to what gives is there is zero corellation between the awesomeness of a release, and it's availibility -- to wit, any dumbass can go to grep-fu.net! On 12/7/05, nat hawks <natbot@hotmail.com> wrote:

Oh, boo-fuckin-hoo. Just because the sorority girl you fantasize about doesn't like Venetian Snares doesn't mean "the genre is dying." Fine, you think mainstream interest is the benchmark for value and vitality. The original poster was basically saying "this music sucks, except for ours!" which doesn't spark my interest, if you know what i mean. So far, "so-called" means "chork (the 5 year RTVF student?) says." Oh shit, I think I may have just figured it out: you *make* music, don't you? -e

...just a little reminder... I am starting to get excited about this one... Seattle is in for a really nice treat! cheers......................... SENSORY EFFECT presents OSCILLATE-- Tuesdays at The Baltic Room--1207 pine st. Seattle WA w/ residents Greg Skidmore and Electrosect live visuals by SHANNON PALMER 9pm $8 21+ Tuesday Dec.13 we are very happy to welcome LOWFISH (suction records, ersatz audio, ghostly intl.,satamile-TORONTO)-live!!! JEREMY P. CAULFIELD (dumb unit records-TORONTO) MIKE SHANNON (dumb unit records-MONTREAL) SATAMILE (satamile records-TORONTO,SF)--DJ set!!! ..here's a little about the performers: LOWFISH Lowfish is the work of Toronto producer Gregory De Rocher, who runs Suction Records with his longtime friend Jason Amm of Solvent. The pair share an appreciation for New Wave and early industrial artists like Skinny Puppy and Front 242, as well as a studio where distorted 808 drum beats and bouncy, melodic analog synth lines are the sounds of choice. De Rocher has been producing for over ten years and it shows in his music. His work is fresh and distinct, with just enough graininess and noise to offset the lushness of the synthesizer melodies and grooves. On Eliminator, his self-proclaimed brand of "robot music" flows naturally as he takes simple ideas and evolves them in his digital petri dish. It's De Rocher's obsession with sound quality and delivery that sets his music apart from other electronic producers. His tracks exude a maturity in craftmanship, a pure focus, with rhythms and delicate textures that never become indulgent or overstated. De Rocher was born in Toronto in 1972. Early in life, he was plagued with hearing problems and frequently found himself confined in soundproof hospital laboratories. Once cured, De Rocher became fascinated by music, especially his mom's disco eight-track of Giorgio Moroder's robo-electric "I Feel Love." His infatuation grew as he began to feverishly collect anything and everything that sounded robotic and modular. By age 16 he was already producing tracks in his home studio. De Rocher cites '70s acts Roedelius and Tangerine Dream, as well as '80s electro-pop legends OMD, New Order, and Art Of Noise as his biggest influences, along with some of the more crunchy techno found on Warp and Rephlex. Along with numerous international compilation and remix appearances, Lowfish has released two full-lengths on Suction: Fear Not the Snow and Other Lo-fiing Objects (1999) and Eliminator (2000). Recently, Suction also put out Snow Robots Volume 1 and 2, a retrospective compilation of works by both Lowfish and Solvent, featuring several out-of-print releases from 1997, plus some new tracks by the pair. There is even a Lowfish remix by Germany's Lali Puna. "Subversive Rats" appeared on Snow Robots Volume 1 while "FatBlex" and "Glued Smile" came from the Eliminator full-length. Meanwhile, "No Longer Accepting Complaints," featuring a dizzingly dirty and hedonistic synthesized bass line, was Lowfish's contribution to Ghostly International's essential robo-electro comp, Tangent 2002: Disco Nouveau, a compendium of contemporary electronic artists doing exciting reinterpretations of the classic Giorgio Moroder-inspired austere disco sound. Later that same year, Lowfish recorded the four-song Accident Causer EP for Adult.'s Ersatz Audio label, then returned with another coldly funky collection of chirpy analog stabs, entitled Maintain the Tension. Lowfish is nothing if not a master of textures, and his mad layers of arpeggiated synths over tinny drum machines sometimes suggest the experimental computer music of yesteryear. Despite his obsessive-compulsive fixation on cleanliness and complexity, De Rocher retains a groovy dance floor energy, making Lowfish a brand of intelligent machine music sure to stimulate all parts of your cerebral cortex. JEREMY P. CAULFIELD Is the owner and operator of the Tornto Based label DUMB UNIT. Over the last 2 years Jeremy has quietly infiltrated the ranks of the minimal and techno scenes by creating a rough, edgy and immediately recognizable sound. This modern, aggressive music with a keen sense of energy for the dance-floor has been featured on such labels as WMF and Trapez. Now he returns home to Dumb-Unit. Side a: deft baggage a haunting and driving track that begins as a dark and brittle mash up. Pitched up digital noise scratches away at the deft and tricky bass line. Then, in typical Canadian style the tracks opens up, and space becomes as important as sound. Quickly we enter into a deep and hypnotic foray into the new confident, Techno sound. Classic techno and minimal structures are adhered to, but the finished product is a polished modern track with Jeremy's tight drums and syncopated buzzes playing ping pong with the slow worbling pads. Side b: 'Slumberjack' already creating havoc on the circuit; 'Slumberjack' is just that: the monsters under the bed, the man behind the door. Pacing, patient and indifferent Slumberjack's apathy quickly transforms into a cold and calculated track. Each pad creeping up to the next, each drum and hi-hat snapping the other into place. Everything slowly creating the groove, no outrageous edits, no filtered vocals just a tight weave of dry clicking Techno, bass heavy tech-house and rocking sawwave minimal MIKE SHANNON Mike Shannon begun his techno career in the Toronto area as a DJ before eventually moving to Montreal, where he flourished as a producer during the early 2000s. Shannon grew up in Kitchener, Ontario, and began DJing at age 12 when his father bought him his first mixer. Occasional excursions to nearby Detroit, where he would buy records and attend parties, spurned his interest in techno as a teenager. Shannon became a professional techno DJ around 1993 or so and began promoting events as well as performing at them. Toward the late '90s he broadened his reach from Kitchener to Toronto, where he landed a Friday-night residency at the fabled Industry club in 1999 and launched Cynosure Recordings that same year. He re-located to Montreal soon afterward to join the city's burgeoning glitch-techno scene fostered by the annual Mutek festival. There he befriended Jeff Milligan (Algorithm), with whom he toured Europe in 2000, and continued his transition from DJ to producer. His efforts were rewarded in 2002 when Force Inc released his debut album, Slight of Hand, and included him on the Montreal Smoked Meat compilation. ANSI C + Derridean différance = Schadenfreude Seriously, tho, considering the anti-intellectualist stance of Chork's other remarks, does this rhetorical move become "anti- intellectualist intellectualism"? distractedly bemused, LMG --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
