I don't think anybody in general does, but where the boundaries of the genre are drawn is somewhat arbitrary. Especially if you compare the new evol intent, spor, tech itch stuff with some of the stuff on meathole... you have to use a criteria other than the sounds to say they aren't the same genre. - cutups --- WRECKED electronic music mailorder http://wrecked-distro.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

And so we come full circle. Kind of a rarity around here and a pleasure to witness. StaticBeats DJ Justes Mix Sessions has been the #1 Jungle station on Live365 for the past 5 years - http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?genre=jungle. Most of the mixes are from the late 90's and early 2000 when I was really into jungle and DnB. Some are available for sale at BBB but all of them can be heard on L365 for free.</bsp> Perhaps jungle has progressed so little over the past few years that even mixes from 1998 sound like they were made today. Where has the music gone since then? Not very far... Some of the US labels like Breakbeat Science have put out terrific releases by artists like Klute and the SF bay area has a few diamonds in the rough like DJ Abstract who consistently releases outstanding and innovative music. I stopped buying jungle a while back and have one last uncompleted mix I was working on but the music just doesn't excite me anymore. I've tried to approach my mixes from different angles to keep it fresh but over the years the sound has all but ceased its evolution. The last jungle album that excited me was Venetian Snares "Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett" and I'd consider that more IDM than DnB. The last live jungle act I saw was Roni Size and that was great. That was over 4 years ago though.. A ramble perhaps. But I empathize with the original poster as I used to be hugely into DnB/Jungle for a number of years and I've all but given up on it for lack of anything new. There isn't lack of anything new really, but when some music or musician takes a genre to another level sometimes it simply stops being (in this case) drum'n'bass, so dnb DJ's stop playing it. Venetian Snares clearly has a strong drum'n'bass influence. On "Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits" the "rudeboy massive" female opera vocal is funny as hell, and he uses a lot of typical drum'n'bass tricks and sounds on it (and mocks them while doing so). The same goes for "Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletet", which is bloody excellent and probably the best thing I bought this year, but it's not drum'n'bass (anymore). When it comes to drum'n'bass recently the more interesting tracks imo are the ones influenced by breakcore or gabber, bringing a rawer edge to the music, like recent stuff by Tech Itch, Dylan on Freaks Recordings, Evol Intent and the Dutch DJ Hidden. -- "progress doesn't come from early risers progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things" http://n3wjack.blogspot.com http://www.jungletrain.net - 24/7 dnb radio station

The closest thing to strict drum'n'bass that Snares has done would still be the Salt ep on Zhark, which is an excellent record. Intense Demonic Attacks, Diffuse Vertigo Jenny and such. The sounds he's using are still well within the realm, but the time signatures give it a somewhat different feel. At the time I was refering to a lot of his stuff as DrunkenBass - not because it sounded sloppy, but because the rhythms often gave the listener a sense of being off-balance. If anyone is really interested and going back and checking out other releases from this period that straddle the line between drum'n'bass and then-blossoming 'breakcore' - there's tons out there... some really good records came out of the DHR camp around '96 or so... although pretty much all the stuff with vocals sounds pretty dated. Praxis, Sub/Version, Cold Fusion, Chrome (before it was re-baptised Position Chrome)... and Kultbox... god damn was Kultbox a good label that pretty much everybody overlooked. The Rude66 record on there is killer - as is the 12" by the Biets Op Je Fiets crew (Sandstorm, Hidden, Eye-D).... The Bomb Dogs material on Audio Illusion is top notch as well...

some of this blurs the line between drum'n'bass and breakcore - but lines are meant to be blurred, imho... and there isn't that much of a line between Plug and de Babalon to begin with - so we might as well smudge it a bit. DJ Scud (a decent collection of his tracks was released on Rephlex), Enduser, Pushy, Christoph de Babalon, Current Value... anything you can find on labels like Sub/version, Ambush and Amputate... Just about anything by Fringelli is brilliant... in fact, a lot of the Praxis back catalog is pretty top notch - although they don't stick to any particular style and some of the records are not for the faint of heart (the Pure release, for example)... Genosha is an interesting label, as was Fear (based out of the US so it had next to no profile in the UK - they released three records and there were tests of two on the Fear Red sublabel)... Eye-D, Hidden, Atomly, Slacknote and Kid Kryptic were part of their roster. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

As far as stuff coming from the "d&b scene", I'd recommend checking out anything from Evol Intent, Noisia, Exile, and Brigade. Some of their stuff gets ragged on, but Pendulum do some amazing productions too, they're sort of the "new bad company". - cutups --- WRECKED electronic music mailorder http://wrecked-distro.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Speaking of Pendulum: Tarantula. Cheesy as hell, but nonetheless, TUUUUUNNNNEEE! Out of interest, have any of the slightly less cheesy drum and bass[1] people around at the moment produced an album worth listening to? For some reason, while I can deal with home listening stuff on 12", if I buy 'proper' dancefloor stuff - the sort of music that is intrinsically better suited to 12's than LP's - I never get round to listening to it very often. Thanks David [1] Note 'drum' not 'drill' -- "And then what do they do?" "Er, quadratic equations mostly, sir. Fiendishly difficult ones by all accounts."

This may sound shamelessly self-promotional, but there are a number of songs you may enjoy on the new Violence LP "Welcome To Violence" by Hive, Keaton, Gridlok and Echo. It's pretty musically diverse and considerably deeper than a lot of the stuff floating around right now. Check out some audio here: http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/servlet/Info?Track=VIOLP001 In regards to other drum&bass artists; besides the names already mentioned I would add Source Direct to the list. -dean

Censor - 'empire holds down'. Interesting sound to the breaks...different, may go a bit 'light' in places, but the title track is blinding, and the Hidden remix is bloody awesome! dean genome <deanome@gmail.com> wrote:> Out of interest, have any of the slightly less cheesy drum and bass[1]

-dean --------------------------------- Yahoo! for Good Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

Definitely serious anthem biz, you can't deny it. There's some new Evol Intent song that has a glitchy NWA mashup that sounds strikingly like Kid606 one (although I know that well enough to know it wasn't sampled from it) That really tore down the house the few times I've heard people Drop it on dub. Aside from the mashed-up part the track itself is really heavy tear-out hard d&b using the distorted kick-style bass that is getting pretty popular. It's interesting how some folks from "inside" the d&b scene are using more noise, glitch and gabber-style kicks in their tracks.

It's not so much 'as soon as someone takes the genre to another level' as 'as soon as someone not from the drum and bass scene starts using typically drum and bass sounds but to produce music that's more concerned with the home listening audience than the dancefloor.' People who feel that they like the sound, but they aren't interested in restricting themselves creatively by following the conventions that mean that DJ's will play the record and dancefloors will respond to it. And this is why DJ's stop playing it. Drum and bass can accomodate change and has done repeatedly in the past (although I'll admit that it's been a bit static recently), it's just that it tends to come from a lot of trial and error experimentation with people sticking in a new element to see if it works in a club, and audiences gradually adapting and keeping up, rather than someone sitting down and coming up with a completely new template from scratch and then wondering why it clears floors... That said, there doesn't seem to be a great amount going on at the moment, although I usually half suspect that this just means that there's a club or a label somewhere that's pushing amazing stuff but that it's far too underground for my suburban arse to have heard of. If anyone around here has heard of it, then do shout... Furthermore... This thread prompted me to do a bit of digging around the interweb, and there does seem to be some interesting stuff coming from the drumfunk / choppage 'scene.' As far as I can tell, this is based on answering the question 'what would have happened if intelligent drum and bass had remained the (experi)mental end of dancefloor music instead of turning into Courtney Pine's arse?' The answer seems to be atmospheric pads and mashed up (often amen) breaks - but it's nice to see something finally getting away from the two-step rhythm. Some of it gets a bit niiiiiice, but there's some cool harder edged stuff as well. Does anyone know any more about this music and where to find it? The other thing I've learnt is that there's a subgenre of drum and bass called clownstep. I /want/ it... <plug> With all this drum'n'bass talk going on I might as well pimp my alltime favorite 24/7 online drum'n'bass radio station jungletrain.net<http://jungletrain.net> ! There's ussually a good live show on during the evenings with cru's from Europe and the US dropping the illest and freshest tunes. Check out the saterday afternoon german Firesession sets if you want to get a taste of the more clowny dnb. Some DJ's in that kru have the tendency to drop the more wobbly bassline tunes. Check the schedules to check out who's playing when, or drop into the chat for some random bohness and info. </plug> -- "progress doesn't come from early risers progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things" http://n3wjack.blogspot.com http://www.jungletrain.net - 24/7 dnb radio station

You kind of have to dig for some of it. Check the forward-bound email list For a good reference point. You can get some of these records through the same places you'd get any other D&B, you just have to dig. I'd recommend checking out Offshore records as well as Inperspective records for some of that stuff.

Many of the biggest anthems of the past few years get labeled clownstep - The over-the-top synth lines and production. It's stuff that is decidedly Pandering to the raver massive, rather than the more "serious" direction D&B had been heading for years. Examples: Dillinga - Twist Em' Out, Fresh - Elm Street, Pendulum - Another Planet, lots of stuff by Twisted Individual. I'd say though that that sound was at its peak a few years ago now... These days there seems to be more of a trend towards the liquid funk / dubby dancefloor stuff (high contrast, commix, logistics, caliber), and then on the other side, the more hardcore, mutant glitch sounds (evol intent, spor, unknown error, exile, enduser...) --- WRECKED electronic music mailorder http://wrecked-distro.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
