IDM really needs some sex idols like Matmos. Tom Jenkinson would be great. When he plays his bass he looks like a pigeon, thats so hot. You could so tell he fell in love by his last CD. He started naming tracks after women and totally reinvented himself. All of those pseudo classical tracks, you can tell he's fucking a celloist. I would say Mouse On Mars would be good sex symbols but they are german and thats not really that hot. All of IDM seems way to dorky and people like Dntel and Telefon Tel Aviv keep on trying to make it pop but i really think it just needs to be more sexy. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? I half-agree: I think IDM really needs a goth infusion. Think: Vampires. Vampires are hot, and androgyny is always good for rock music, it gets the juices flowing for both the boys and the girls. We need hot sexy goth IDM. I remember a couple years back there was a short-lived joke website about Autechre & Aphex quitting IDM to do nordic death metal. I wouldn't quite want that, but I think the electronic music scene deathly [hah!] needs an infusion of goth sensibilities. Bola could do, his music's pretty dark lately. sounds like it. RDJ looked not too bad in his hippie phase, when he wasn't grimacing or tying his face in rubber bands. apparat is a good looking guy. but ellen allien is definitely very pretty and charming. andrea of converter (ok that's rhythmic noise, whatever) is totally hot. the thing is, the nerdiness works. so if people are just nerdy but hot-looking without actually trying to sell their looks i think that would be best. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sheesh get a grip! Even if I were being serious, it's not like the music you love would disappear if some new people were trying to make goth IDM. There's a kind of gothicism in some anime & cyberpunk, maybe a goth IDM could feed off of that. China Mieville occurs to me here... Actually being serious, didn't "electroclash" try to make some quick bucks off making IDM sexy? And wasn't the result just a short-lived '80s new-wave revival? Wouldn't "making IDM sexy" just be turning it into something that's not IDM? Doesn't the music have to be sexy first? I mean, I'm trying to imagine Funckarma or Arovane being played in a strip club and it just ain't working. Some of it can be pretty sensual - I'd say some of the Funcken bros' music is close to goth as it is (that sort of plaintive, sadly nostalgic emotion is steps away from goth; sometimes reminds me of early cure stuff) - but not really sexy. Plaid are kinda sexy, tho. -adam --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Isn't IDM pretentious enough as it is? I think the last thing we should do is encourage these artists to try and become celebrities. One of the main reasons I got interested in this vague and wide ranging genre is the fact that most artists are faceless. It's about the music. I could care less what any of these artists look like. If I see them perform live, I expect them to be hidden behind mountains of equipment. If you care about 'image' I suggest picking up a Jessica Simpson disc. --- Mark Schieldrop Reporter, The South County Independent (401)608-2037 mark@schieldrop.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

That is totally true, i love the music for the music. I think Squarepusher is really hot cause he makes me cry without words, thats what got me into IDM. IDM as a genre is getting really rigid though and thats what i meant, it is losing its soul. Mark Schieldrop <mark@schieldrop.net> wrote:> I half-agree: I think IDM really needs a goth infusion. Arguably, there is a large IDM/goth crossover anyway! As an ex-goth dabbler myself (I'm 39 ferchrissake - give me some slack!!! I was there "back in the day"!) and I sometimes try to convince the goths of this. Think Scorn, Spectre, Techno-Animal, Simm and the whole Dub-Hop thing. Also, alot of dark ambient could be construed as very "goth". Opinions, please? As for the IDM-needs-sex-appeal aspect, well I can accept Autechre as totty - they've got cheekbones, after all! ;o) There's got to be quite alot of other male IDM-totty, but at the moment all I can think of is Alec Empire. (However, I think he does "know it" a bit, which is, of course, immensely unattractive!) Witness the performance, the other year when he played on the same bill as Richard H Kirk and Capitol K at the ICA - he came on stage stripped to the waist and with his torso sprayed gold!!! In this month's issue of The Wire, however, he is pictured live, but no gold paint is to be seen! :-) Female IDM totty is a whole lot thinner on the ground! All I can think of right now is Andrea Parker! ...Unless Sheila Chandra counts!!! 8-D She is my "perfect woman"! Yummm!!! (BTW - I hope you all realise that this is all said with my tongue firmly in my cheek! :-) After all, it's only right that we should have a laugh at this time of year. ...However, if our small display of wanton banal sexism deteriorates into The Benny Hill show then I shall have to hit you all over the heads with my metaphorical truncheon! ...And I don't mean my love-truncheon, either! Doh!!! I've taken it all too far!) OoooOOOooohhh!!! Almost equally controversial! Surely, isn't being "hidden behind mountains of equipment" an image in its own right? Do you think any less of an IDM artist if they don't have mountains of equipment ...or at least are hunched over the very latest Mac laptop?!? ;o) Heh heh! I've listened to electronic music since the early 80s (think Depeche Mode/Art of Noise) before migrating to (post)industrial (late 80s - Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, Ministry, nine inch nails, Skinny Puppy) and industrial (SPK, Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Coil, Throbbing Gristle) and on to IDM/ambient (isolationism)/noise in the mid 90s (Aphex Twin, Speedy J, Illusion of Safety, Lustmord, Merzbow, Brighter Death Now, etc.) and I've always loved some sports, football, namely. I played football and some other sports and have always been fairly active, but I also played Dungeons and Dragons and was really into computers and synthesizers from an early age (I lusted after an Ensoniq Mirage in the 80s but had to settle for some cheap Roland piano-emulator while playing Ultima IV on my C64 and later on my Amiga; thankfully now I own a Yamaha VL1, Yamaha FS1R, Crumar DS-2, Kawai K5000S, Korg Oasys and Waldord XTk to assuage the lust I had for the Mirage way back when). It's true that electronic music fans are generally not sport enthusiasts, but it's not always the case. It seems like most "underground" musicians and their fans come from a certain antisocial, antiestablishment mindset, wherein these fans and musicians have bitter memories of being beaten up by jocks in high school, thus (perhaps) eschew sports later in life. Or perhaps I'm generalizing. :) -- Mr. Tangent [the binary police] www.mrtangent.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
