i did a bit of poking around with the warez, it is something like that yes,
or at least that's one of the approaches, yes
all of them NI Vokator, Kontakt, Battery, Intact, and some sample machines
in Reaktor all do allow for control of sample start point and direction of
playback through a granulizer orsomething like that
i guess i was looking for that exact behavior that you'd get out of a
tracker, and yeah, it was just one of the approaches, but it worked
here:

Fruity Loops sending CC to it, mapped out to control the sample start and
speed of playback (both forwards and backwards)

You could build something to do this in NI Reaktor I suspect. I've not had
the time to dig that far into Reaktor, but it's extreme adaptability would
seem to make it ideal for what you suggest.
Not much help, but might be worth downloading the demo version to see if
it's too much for your head.
