I just got myself a Minidisc Playah and am thereupon looking for some actual pre-recorded albums in this particular format. So: what decent records (in almost any genre, really) have been released as minidiscs? At least nMD5 used to release MDs - what are the finest bits from their catalogue? What about Among Others and Punctuated? Not much has been released in MD format, it seems, or at least not many places sell them. MiniDisc never really caught on as a pre-recorded format, so very few releases were ever made available as MDs. In fact, Sony recently announced that they would no longer be manufacturing pre-recorded MiniDiscs, and since they were the only place to get pre-recorded MDs made, that has pretty much killed that aspect of the format. It's still great for recording, though. I have a portable Sony from a few years ago, and a desktop JVC MD/CD/radio unit that I have hooked up to my computer which I use to record MP3s and other audio files. Anyway, if you still have your heart set on getting some pre-recorded MDs, pretty much all of the n5MD MiniDisc releases are good, and the Gescom MD on Touch is interesting to play around with. Those are the only ones I can think of off-hand, aside from a few major label releases that came out back when the format was first introduced and that are probably long out of print. Yeah, a lot more releases came out on MD in the UK, Europe and Japan than in North America. I think Mute UK released some stuff on MD, for example, but the only large North American labels that released many MD titles were Sony and associated labels. I remember back when MiniDisc was first introduced by Sony, there was another new format called DCC (Digital Compact Cassette - sort of a hybrid of DAT and regular cassettes) introduced by another company (Phillips, I think). The flagship HMV store in Toronto had a big display of MD and DCC releases along with players you could check them out on, and has it set up as a "which format do you prefer" challenge of some sort. The problem with that challenge, though, was that none of the major labels were behind both formats. Sony was behind MD, and I think PolyGram and Warner were behind DCC. And the indies were completely ignoring both of 'em. So from the perspective of selection (which is all the casual music fan really cares about), both formats sucked. And not only was the "software" limited for both formats, but this all took place only a couple of years after CDs had taken off. So consumers had no interest in getting into another audio format when they were still busy replacing their vinyl & cassette collections with CDs. Anyway, DCC died a well-deserved death, and while MD pretty much died in North America, Sony was smart enough to heavily market it in other regions like Japan as a recordable format to replace cassettes as opposed to a replacement for CDs. That basically saved the format, and allowed it to come back to life in North America a few years later (albeit on a fairly limited basis). Of course, the introduction of cheaper MP3 players in the last few years has dealt the MD format a pretty serious blow, and some worry that Sony's decision to stop making pre-recorded MDs means that they might pull the plug on the format entirely at some point. But as long as someone somewhere is still selling blanks, I'm not too worried. But not smart enough to allow digital uploads (MD -> computer) to be made using the USB port that equips the MD players/recorders since several years, despite insistent requests from the marketplace for such a feature. I (and many other people, I would think) am looking for what this person describes: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&frame=right&th=3 04e2d8a866bdcfd&seekm=z4Zyb.389164%24HS4.3197059%40attbi_s01#link1 I still haven't found it. Sony could have seized rather easily that sizable market. Dumb Sony.

Sony has been like that for a while. They'd much rather develop a new technology that has the chance of getting a foothold based on their name alone (since their products will thus use their tech exclusively) regardless of what else is on the market. It screws the consumers as tech that doesn't take hold ends up forever in obsolescence. To me, MD's only saving grace is the ability to record on the fly, such as at concerts or whatever, but the other features are far surpassed by other electronics on the market. -- eggytoast.com -- eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, but Sony's hardware division, whilst producing the largest turnover of any Sony divisions, has to respect the digital rights managements requirements of Sony Entertainment who make the majority of Sony's profit. They are in a manufacturers paradox. Hence no iPod equivalent as Sony don't support non-digitally rights managed formats such as MP3, but instead use their own format ATRAC3. Protecting their interests, as a business, isn't dumb [well, it is if you are an anti capitalist, but they aren't, they are a business]. I'm sure the market whilst seeming big to you as an individual is quite small to them as a company. It's all a matter of perspective. See http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.02/sony.html?pg=1 for a different perspective. Now Digital Rights Management ... that is dumb ;-) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Slightly off-topic, but I've thought for a while that MD would be a good storage medium for digital cameras. They're cheap, durable, compact; I'd imagine one could store at least 100Mb of data. It would require Sony to market a device like you describe (USB MD "disc drive") and I guess that would give them the shits over allowing direct access to the data on music MDs. -- Richard --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

*memory kicks back in* Fiona was on Work, aka "Sony Work Group" and Skint had a deal with Sony for a while, as did labels like Hardkiss and Ovum, though usually through Columbia. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Thanks for the comments. Yea, I think I'll just check what nMD5 has to offer and then forget all about pre-recorded MDs. I still need to decide exactly what to purchase from them, though, since I can order only three MDs from nMD5 without being hit by VAT. They are offering the following four records in minidisc-format: PROEM / among others TIM KOCH / mine is yours QUENCH / punctuated PORTLAND / distal So I need to leave one out. 'Punctuated' has received a lot of praise, so I guess I need to get at least that one. I've read a few reviews of 'among others' as well, but those two others, Koch's 'mine is yours' and Portland's 'distal', are entirely unfamiliar to me. What kind of records are they, and are they any good? Go to the n5md site and check out the downloads section. They've got 20min.+ samples from most of the releases you've mentioned. I think they are all good. Koch is a bit schizophrenic. Portland is nice and deep, as is Proem. .greg.

In a fit of irony, I will recommend highly Proem's release, if only for the Secede remix, though the whole thing's pretty good. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, but since I think the general problem with IDM is that the artists do not excel in making their tracks progress in interesting and stimulating ways, IDM usually sounds much better in short clips... But what do you mean with Koch being schizophrenic? At least it didn't sound like 5-sec-attention-span-drillnbass -schizophrenic to me... In fact, of those two (Koch vs Portland), Koch sounded far better and original. Portland sounded quite stereotypical and uninspired, sorta like Proem Lite. But then again - Igloomag, which usually likes absolutely everything, criticized the Koch disc as rather uninteresting and "not totally satisfying". I mean, Igloomag usually praises every freakin uninspiring 'soft ethereal pads and crunchy beats' album and finds any fault in only about 1 % of all the reviewed records, and now they rail this! But Igloomag can go screw themselves. To me, 'Mine is Yours' sounded much more unique than 'Distal'... ... umm, yea. .: visa tapani ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gregory Skidmore" <iamgreg@ziplip.com> To: "visa" <visa.tapani@kanetti.fi>; "hyperreal idm" <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, December 31, 2003 4:07 AM Subject: Re: [idm] MD releases

Start off with the two compilations on n5md- lots of great stuff including some exclusive tracks from some idm heavyweights. The Proem and Quench mds are tasty, too, although the Quench has also been recently released on cd. Obviously- www.n5md.com for all info, tracklists, downloads, news and whatever... I just got myself a Minidisc Playah and am thereupon looking for some actual pre-recorded albums in this particular format. So: what decent records (in almost any genre, really) have been released as minidiscs? At least nMD5 used to release MDs - what are the finest bits from their catalogue? My order of n5MD (MD) goods (w/ reviews from Igloo) would be: 1. Proem: http://igloomag.com/doc.php?task=view&id=235&category=reviews 2. Quench: http://igloomag.com/doc.php?task=view&id=411&category=reviews 3. Portland: http://igloomag.com/doc.php?task=view&id=506&category=reviews 4. Well, after some considering I've come to the conclusion that neither the Koch disc nor the Portland are quite good enough to warrant a purchase. But since the international postage is as high as 7.55$, I think I should still order a third item to go with Quench and Proem. So, what about their cd-selections? ML / everyone looks like somebody else SPARK / The robotic girl next door / CD Or perhaps I should wait a few months and get either the Proem live disc, or the new MD8-compilation when they come out... For my 2 cents, Proem is an excellent choice (but then I'm, like, Proem's official fanboy or something), and the Quench is good, too. I love the ML album - I'd pick that up, I think it's quite inventive and diverse, in a standard melodic IDM kind of way. The Spark disc is also good, but I'd suggest the ML disc first - maybe save the Spark for a future n5MD order? -Adam -- :::::::::::::::::::::: !Dean for America '04! www.deanforamerica.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
