Hi All, This is the only place that I use this email address, and I've been getting an increasing amount of SPAM to my address. A quick search shows that address's are listed as whole on the archives for the list, any chance that these could be munged so that something like muffin@signmytits.com becomes Muffin [at] signmytits [dot] com Thus stopping those horrible people who crawls mailing list archives for email address's getting our details automagically? Sorry if this is an old topic, but I'm really depressed by the amount of spam I get already, and don't need more. And I don't want to get into the "Just press delete" argument. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Just install a decent spam blocker, like SpamAssasin. If you don't have admin rights, then pester the admin to install it. The way to look at it these days is spam is unavoidable, so it's best not to get worked up about trying to prevent it getting to your mailbox, but just to divert it to it's own mailbox and delete as needed. I know all this - that's why I said I didn't want to get into an argument and why I have a unique address for this list. But part of the point is that anyone with any degree of responsibility keeping an archive should be aware and munge/withhold the address anyway. I'd like to limit the noise on the internet as close to source as possible, rather than it getting to my server [or my desktop which also has numerous filters and programs blocking spam]. But as I said before I don't want an argument it was a suggestion/request. I'm a fucking sysadmin and so I know how to block spam, trace spam, and get annoyed by spam. I get annoyed because of the munching of bandwidth that can be used by irrelevant email. So stop it at source. It's more environmentally friendly. It's also helping propagate some of the more horrible outlook/email Viri, and whilst that is people's own fault for having those features enabled on their computers it's still good to stop the spread. Like wearing a condom when you fuck a stranger. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ah I see it as kind of a trade off. The more spam that's sent around, the better the spam blocking programs become. Because it's a race between the spam senders and the spam blockers, to see which one can keep ahead. I just notcied aswell, I haven't seen a dramatic increase in my level of spam since I joined this list. Not that I post to it much or anything, but still, once is enough.

99.9% of bandwidth is used irrelevantly, spam is merely a small subset of this. Neil -- Are we going to the same place? Actually where are the archives you're talking about? The only ones I can find are gzipped Berekley style mailboxes, which I'm guessing is an extremly inefficent way of harvesting e-mail addresses. I just googled on my email address and came up with this http://idm.skylab.org/200301/maillist.html Do you reckon spammers care about efficiency? They are clogging up the network so I wouldn't have thought so. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Sadly, it does happen, but I think only the non-gzipped files are crawled, and a script automatically gzips the previous month's archive on the first of the month. So you can reduce your chances of getting picked up through those files by posting later in the month. :) The only thing you can really do when posting to any public forum is expect to get spam at the address you posted from. That's the sad state of the Internet these days. We try to mitigate it, but there's not much we can do, and once an email address is known to spammers, it has other ways of propagating, as I'm sure you're all aware ("5 million email addresses for $500! - click here!"). Even if the list weren't archived at Hyperreal, other subscribers could be harvesters or could be (and certainly are, as in the case of the skylab.org site) putting the posts into their own publicly accessible archives.
