So Pietro was disarmingly nice to me about my crabby review, and it
inspired me to go back and listen to the entire release in more detail.
One thing, for context tho. On Instagram, Twitter and some other social
media, I follow tags like #autechre and #aphextwin and stuff, maybe you
guys do to. This is great except one thing you can't avoid is hundreds of
posts of people posting, I don't know, sometimes it seems like ANY
electronic album and saying "this is just like #aphextwin #autechre
#squarepusher" and just heaping the tags on it.
It works, it's a good way to get attention, piggybacking on hugely popular
institutions of IDM like the Warp posse. So, it sets me up for a bit of a
trigger reaction when I see anything that says "SOUNDS LIKE AUTECHRE" and
it isn't IMMEDIATELY sounding like Ae to me.
Now, to be fair, FF0000 is described as having 'echoes of autechre and
richard devine', which it does. But not really, in track 5, which is the
track they chose to lead with on the Bandcamp page, and which is 11 minutes
long. So, I listened to a long hard dose of what honestly sounded like
normal, DAW sequenced, industrial noise (to my ears, at the time)
And my immediate reaction was, how the hell does this sound like Autechre?
Which, is really something I experience DAILY it seems like, clicking on
random albums described as "AUTECHRE LIKE!"
So anyways, I went back and listened to this album in its entirety and
honestly, I'm a bit embarrassed at how utterly wrong I was about it.
Starting from track 1, yeah, OK, this sounds dead on like Autechre 'means
of production' (i.e., ok, you used a modular and/or max-msp instead of just
trying to fake it in your FL Studio) -- but again, like Qebo and some
others, manages to have it's own vibe and sensibilities, and is coming from
it's own 'heart' and not trying to emulate Autechre's melodies or vibes.
The album, however, really does start to get more and more and more
'subtle' and muddy as it progresses, which I guess, isn't entirely bad,
it's almost like it starts out full of energy and maybe a little hyper, and
descends into kind of a foggy morass of broken bits. Which makes it a
little harder to focus on as it progresses, if you aren't fully 'with it',
but is in itself pleasing once you find your way 'into' it.
I dunno I'll probably end up buying it lol.
Anyways, if I ever annoy you, just be really nice to me and it's like
kryptonite :)
