Sorry, Richard, but didn't realize we were bothering you. I thought this list was supposed to foster discussions about "Intelligent Dance Music". Didn't realize that meant only things from the last year. But why not discuss the re-evaluation of 80's rock music? Infinately more interesting than about 70% of current elect. music. Guaranteed to be more fun than discussing Warp artists, or the pediphilic aspects of pastoral IDM. (err, maybe not) But I'm curious, is there something happening out there that's intersting and (dare I say it) "new"? Besides, it's not anyone's discussing Air Supply (oh, wait a minute...) Rock the Casbah!(not ironic- unless you count contextal irony, then it is) Donna S.

It's not just bothering Richard.

Check the list mandate again. It's an irritating discussion and completely off-topic. Aside from that, and I know you didn't say this, there are many other things to discuss about "IDM" besides predicting who the next artist to be consumed, trainspotted and trashed is going to be. We could probably make more of an attempt to have an Intelligent Music Mailing List (IMML). "IDM is a list focusing on the discussion of the "Intelligent Dance Music" subset of electronic music." Feel free to explain to us how Foreigner, Air Supply and Neil Diamond have *anything* to do with this. (I thought the attempt with Def Leppard was pretty good, though :) Other important bits: "We rely on common courtesy to keep the list content under control and on-topic" and "Just remember that your mail goes into approximately 900 mail boxes worldwide therefore unrelated or unneccessary posts should be kept to an absolute minimum."

Not ironic. i'm not going to speak for anyone else on this list, but... using a high traffic email list that dumps hundreds of emails into my inbox every week, to socialize with 3 other people about not only irrelevant music, but REALLY BAD music, is tackier than anything Foreigner or Def Leppard ever did. it's a chat-room topic. i'm sure there are tons of people on soulseek that would love to talk about old 80s rawk music. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? in the news today: Man's Belated Discovery Of 'Kitsch Humor' Dismays Internet Mailing List Subscribers INTERNET--On an internet email list dedicated to "Intelligent Dance Music", subscribers were first amused, and then aggravated, at a slew of off-topic messages by a few members who loudly proclaimed their love for rock music from the early 1980s such as Foreigner, Def Leppard, and Journey. "At first we weren't sure whether the individuals were serious or not," One member recalls, "I mean, it seemed like such an old played out joke to me. 'Oh, ELO rawks!', that sort of thing. Surely this was something new, and not just another 'look at me, I listen to sucky music' gag. I mean me and my friends were into that joke when I first discovered I could download Bananarama and Falco songs from Napster." Soon, however, the messages gave away the posters' true intent, as more astute members began to notice a certain ignorance on the part of the posters. "One guy described Lou Gramm [lead singer of Foreigner] as 'that guy'! At that point I knew he was just trying to be ironic." After a few low-key 'Cease and Desist' messages, the conversation went back to the normal topics, such as the pros and cons of live laptop performances and whether or not Boards of Canada are gay. It's not just bothering Christopher and Richard. Is this list moderated? There seems to be at least one individual on the list who relishes in ignoring the topic, and being personally abusive to other list members. Who is the moderator, please? Christopher Sorg wrote:

Oh, please, am I really being abusive? Never have I swore at a fellow member, never have I tried to argue with someone personally. Always about the facts, mam. Always a good idea to keep a sense of humor involved... DS PS: What is the Topic?

Which was what I thought I -and others- were doing. Some good fun was had on here in recent posts, If my first post were ignored then that would have been that...
quoted 4 lines "IDM is a list focusing on the discussion of the "Intelligent Dance>"IDM is a list focusing on the discussion of the "Intelligent Dance >Music" subset of electronic music." Feel free to explain to us how >Foreigner, Air Supply and Neil Diamond have *anything* to do with this. (I >thought the attempt with Def Leppard was pretty good, though :)
I thought that was good as well. Can't speak for the relevance of Air Supply and Neil Diamond as I've only posted about Foreigner (again others brought those artists up). But what I will say is this: Foreigner, like a number of bands who have fallen out of social favor, are an interesting example of a time when rock music was subtly fused with electronic elements and sold to the public as something entirely else. These electronic elements in the music did indeed have an impact on how many of view popular music, which in turn helps us to evaluate the music at the fringes, like IDM. Also it's of note how certain bands help us to remember a certain time through emotive sensibilities and I think it's more than clear that a number of people on this list hold these musical concepts and sensibilities dear. Now, Just about everyone hates the term IDM. We've all discussed how much we hate it. It's a dead issue that comes screaming from the grave every few months or so only to be beaten back to the cold, dead earth. My point with posting to the "IDM' list is this: there's plenty of great "Intelligent" music out there, old and new. Sometimes things are at a lull in any community- especially this one, so why not take a slow moment and take advantage of this to discuss something that could be fun and (dare I say it) even informative to members of the list? Lastly, who's to say what is and isn't "Intelligent"? If we were discussing academic theories and concepts, it'd be one thing, but a lot of this music grew out of the Rave scene, and indeed is treated like non-dancing-rave music, so let's get off the high horse, OK? I know a lot of musicians in the scene, and they almost all hate this list for it's narrow-minded views. Let's broaden our view a bit...

I only posted this thread yesterday- a relatively short period of time. It's not like I'm screaming BoC are gay... So I thried to prove myself. How'd I do?
