Hello illustrious denizens of the IDM-L I've been greatly enjoying a couple short piano tracks on a few albums, namely the first and last track off Chris Clark's "Clarence Park," and a few off the Drukqs album, and some notable Plaid tracks. So, I'm wondering what else is out there? Length isn't too important, since most of everything I've heard barely breaks the 2 minute mark, if that. I'm not talking about "crazy idm with some piano," I mean tracks that are mostly piano, perhaps slightly affected. Doesn't have to be from idm artists, as I'm open to suggestions. Freescha might have some piano tracks here and there, try Kids Fill The Floor first (last track is nice). Other than that, non-IDM artists like The Flaming Lips (the newer stuff), Grandaddy, Mercury Rev (the newer stuff), etc. might be interesting too. poussinfrais

Check out the recent recording of Rachmaninov's "Piano Concerto No.2" with Helene Grimaud as pianist, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Absolutely blinding. (And she's a bit of a babe too!) Prokofiev's Visions Fugitives is gorgeous, though the orchestrated version seems to be the most widely available rather than the original solo piano pieces. Chopin's Preludes are gorgeous too, moody and dark. Someone suggested Cage's 40s piano pieces - I'd second that - lovely stuff, my cd is Wergo. Cheers, Colin.

hello i highly recommend Vert's "the k?ln konzert" CD which is mostly slightly out-of-tune upright piano with added efx and electronic loops. also he has a track on the Sonig compilation (released in the US by Thrill Jockey) that makes the disc on the whole worthwhile. I didn't really care for "9 types of ambiguity" by Vert half as much but you might look into it if you enjoy these others. Twine released a pretty good long piano track at the end of their split with Horchata that came out in 1999, although it's not representative of that release on the whole. Figurera, the guy who runs the swedish Komplott label, released a really excellent LP last year called "de reperare" i think. it's great! really nice, melodic (but not new age sounding) piano compositions mixed with some digital processing and some crunchy beats. but it's mostly got more of a neoclassical slant, and is less deliberately aligned with the majority of current IDM trends. you could always go the more obvious route and look into composers such as Harold Budd and Philip Glass, whose piano compositions are pretty nice, although a lot more straightforward in most instances. you might look into the Smyglyssna "Departures" 12" which is pretty interesting and minimal, on the Vertical Form label. I don't know that his other stuff sounds comparable necessarily but i think this one has some great delicate moments. on a slightly different note i might suggest the AGF album on orthlorng musork which does little with piano but manages to do an array of interesting things with the female voice (AGF is the vocalist of laub). think fennesz meets female voice.

So, I'm wondering what else is out there I was listening to a cd just yesterday that I wanted to recommend to the list that might fit the bill... Phylr- Contra la Puerta on Invisible Records Dark and cinematic electronic/post-rock from J.F. Coleman formerly of Cop Shoot Cop. Live drums, lots of piano, live strings, rather weighty electronic bass lines. His second album, "Half Life" isn't quite as good as the first, but both are worth looking in to.

idm artists, as I'm open to suggestions. someone's already mentioned the fabulous Erik Satie, and I can only add that the Naxos label has a fantastic series of Satie disks for about $6 each, unfortunately I can't recall the name of the pianist, but she's great and picks great pieces to play. Speaking of great, ridiculously cheap stuff from Naxos, they've released John Cage's "Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano (1946-48)". Certainly fits the bill of "piano, slightly affected," in this case by junk stuck in the piano strings. Unlike his later, random process stuff, this is his composed stuff. eccentric, melodic, understated, most of it clearly influenced by gamelan music. highly recommended. Bartok's "Mikrokosmos" is a treasure trove of great 30 second to two minute gems. Written for piano students, it goes from baby simple to virtuosically complex. usually some little hungarian folk melody chiseled into a gracefully contorted bit of invention with a lot of soul. yeah, I think it's worth springing for a complete version. I see the Naxos CD skimps on the earlier, simpler pieces which are terrific. The two performances I have on vinyl seem to be out of print or not released on CD. for what its worth, one's a Vox box played by Gyorgi Sandor, the other's played by Homero Francesch on Deutsche Grammophon. The Sandor is more lyrical sounding and more satisfying overall despite a certain 'old fashioned' (post-romantic?) vibe. the Francesch has a more cerebral, modern feel which sometimes sounds crisp and fresh and at other times plodding. a trip to Amazon.com reveals that there's a Sandor "Mikrokosmos" on Sony Classics, don't know if it's the same recording as my Vox, but probably worth checking out. They are different recordings. The music Sandor recorded for Sony was later in his career and is supposedly inferior (at least technically) to what is available on Vox.

Kocsis on Philips and Ranki on Teldec are definitely paths to explore. And then there's Bartok himself who recorded a couple of them (CBS/Sony). Oops. I'd been ignoring this thread but I just read this post. Didn't realize we'd gotten into Mikrokosmos. What is the best recording of any of the Mikrokosmos to look for? Did anyone ever do any sort of electronic working of Mikrokosmos? It seems like lots of those pieces would be well suited to that sort of thing.
