Ah, that's probably my favorite afx release. Definitely one of the things that inspired me to start making music again. Mmm... aphex twin video game music. Not to bring back this thread back to life, but I thought we all determined that with the exception of a couple previously released tracks such as Fingerbib, the tracks on the "Melodies from Mars" mp3 set are NOT AFX tracks. Anyway, that was the verdict of the IDM list two years ago. a lot of the stuff i've been doing myself has that same flavor. was thinking for a long time that it was sort of substandard and shitty, but then i found i really do enjoy it for certain things. seems to me i read an interview with mira calix some time ago that said as a youngster she only had access to cassette tapes and the subsequent compression that comes with magnetic audio media, and that has a great deal of influence on how she works. made me feel a little justified, and so does some aphex. i dig. not to say that crispy hi-fi is second rate, just that there's a place for everything. :mz · http://posthoc.org/ | http://ecesis.org/ 'if there were two of you, which one would win?'

the same i felt when i first recorded some of my own tunes. i could only use a crappy taperecorder, but when i played it, it was so different from the original sound on the computer, and much better. i could feel that a lot of subharmonies added to the original sound. bias. I personally go with the proven idea that they were tracks from a demo tape he mailed around to some video-game companies for the hell of it. not caring about high quality + non-professional release + no professional mastering + demo tape = lo-fi These songs aren't even supposed to exist in public. So, really, the quality is the least surprising thing about them. derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- fresh like pie --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
