Talking of Allmusic, I had a quick look around the site and noticed that Confield was produced by Brown Bannister and Alison Booth. Bannister is a leading light in the gospel scene, and Booth recently collaborated with Michael Bolton on 'My Secret Passion'. No wonder the fans were complaining it was a bit of a departure... The whole concept of an AMG 'expert' review is pretty naff and all. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=A34420r2ai48c Dan. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can anyone make sense of this 'Clarence Park' review? http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=A4mknu3x0an6k No, I thought not. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yes, that's a terrible review and I decided to have it replaced two weeks ago. Apologies.

Brown Banister (a local here where I live) also has a rep for being a harsh perfectionist who's relentless and good at helping get the very best out of any artist. He's been producing music for 20-30 years. So as credentials go, he's very good at what he does... but I've also never heard of him working with electronic music before. Very odd, if you ask me. -matT nashville.tn np://david byrne/look into the eyeball/like humans do/

There was just something that rubbed me the wrong way about the word 'expert' used in conjunction with 'review'. Considering that all music is subjective and everything, I'm not sure expert is a word you can comfortably use to describe what is in effect an opinion, regardless of how well written/informed it is (and the niggling errors in a couple of them showed up the theory a bit as well). Maybe that's just me... Don't get me wrong - it's not a terrible site - just spent half an hour or so looking through it - the artists biographies are pretty good. Dan.

That's fair -- we often have a laugh when an obviously "unexpert" review makes its way into the system, and there is a bit of arrogance behind that banner. As for the various errors/inaccuracies, this is often a care-taking/librarian type of job -- as much of our time is spent fixing things as doing new stuff... A little IDM content: does anyone have the facts as to the recording dates on the new Aphex Twin? We got the full two-disc version here (apparently it was sent out early by mistake) and even though it sounds great, there's a lot of eerily familiar material. You can almost peg which year each of these tracks came from, or which release they should've been on... I'm glad there's new stuff out, but I wonder if he just cleared out his hard drive to get it out. I had a chat with mr james ages ago about this... he said there were hundreds of hours of unreleased material sitting at home with little chance of ever being released. And that it was the same situation with mike paradinas and luke vibert. I don't know how true this is... Most of Luke Vibert's last album 'musipal' was recorded quite a while ago, where you can recognise the year of tracks from other records you bought ages ago. I guess it's up to them what to release and what not to....but it suggests to me they don't really care much about their output. .. .. .. .. .. . . .. . . . paul webb____designer____http://www.digitlondon.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
