I went to the Cex show at the Silverlake Lounge in LA on Monday night. It was embarrasingly bad. Stars as Eyes first. Boring, lo-fi-ish, bland, almost put me to sleep. Their only good part was the last half of the first song which sounded like Pink Floyd. Languis next. At least I knew that they were going to be mellow and sleepy. I must've looked at my watch every three minutes through their entire set. Electric Company next. Awesome. Cut-up, cd skipping sounding darkness. Not heavy, but grindy and unsettling. Brad consistently impresses me. Cex last. Somebody on the list said "Dude, we're not laughing with you, we're laughing AT you." Exactly. He started the show by instructing us to envision ourselves at a Baltimore hospital because Cex was pregnant and about to give birth to 'bees.' He raps his way through the first song whose only line I deciphered was Cex going on about how his 'pussy hurt.' Really high brow stuff. Musically, it sounded like the sounds could've been sequenced in and played by a DR-550. And I don't even dislike his studio stuff, but in the live setting you can't help but feel embarrased for him. I left after three songs, so it might've changed after that, but I'm thinking I didn't miss anything. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Okay, here goes it, I was just gonna keep my mouth shut, but nah its on. First off "Stars as Eyes" - missed the set, but have heard the music, and its rad, not your run of the mill clanky poopy cut and pop shite. Sorry we didnt make it in time Steve, there will be more shows. Languis, we arrived in the mid point of this set, at first i was interest, like Brian said Mellow, sleepy, happy...but does that make it bad? no it was interesting. Electric Company - heh as Brian said again "Cut-up, cd skipping sounding darkness." which is the whole reason this music is driving my head into a wall. its all sounding the same, sorry Brad, its not you, its me...for real. And now, big ups to my boy Rjyan. I for one thought it was rock'n, the vibe was ill, yes we were laughing, because we were having a good time and not just staring at some twat hiding behind his computer whilst clicking and popping.(like me, hey THATS WUT I DO!). My fav was the glitchy boom boom bass of the "girls in the club put your hands up, if you want the guys in the club to take their balls out" track. I dunno, where has the sense of humor gone with you people? Brian -"I left after three songs, so it might've changed after that, but I'm thinking I didn't miss anything." - you missed allot, of talking, music and fun. But hey, if thats something your not into, its all good. or............... maybe your girlfriends mad that theres only one cex, and your not him. more to come, I'm out of words to use. sprek:keith www.soundmangle.com At 08:16 PM 7/10/2001 +0000, brian albers wrote:

while i enjoyed the show and recommend it to most of ya'll (and many non idm-list, non this list type music fans), i can COMPLETELY understand this (alan's) perspective. i think it is silly that folks are pointing to cex as some great idm performer that others should follow -- while he is great at what he does, i just cannot see folks like AE and phoenecia busting it out like he does. often times i enjoy the sterile environment/presentation of an idm show (well, i much prefer folks getting lost in the music and going mad, but i dont need the performer to do that for me and/or everyone else)... and to have someone yapping over the music i like to hear the whole time could get very old -- so i can understand how folks might be turned off by this if they ENJOY idm type music as it is normally presented. that said, cex was very, very good.. we laughed a lot. it was funny. it was fun. it was goofy. but i cannot say it was much more (the sound at the austin show SUCKED). and i will say i was craving a bit more of his agro vocal style like in "academy award" or whatever it is called. for what it's worth, chris --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
