I don't know about any other idmers out there but I have really been enjoying Arovane's Atol Scrap way more than BoC as of late. I mean, I think BoC has made some great music, but I don't think Arovane gets enough exposure/hype for the quality of the stuff they've put out... imo. As true as these things are, they're just weak excuses for people who wish one artist were more popular than another. You're not supposed to wish for popularity, you're supposed to hunker down in your corner and silently cherish how special you are for being one of very few people who are fans of your pet obscure artist. Face it, that's why we're all into this in the first place - it makes us feel good to like obscure stuff because we're special, part of an elite in-crowd. [Please employ use of Sarcasm Detector version 3.7 or later before considering flame responses. Thank you.] Seriously, though, I firmly believe that attention paid to artists is the attention they deserve. Not a measure of worth or "who's better" kind of stuff. Cultural attention is kind of like breathing - it's a natural process that just *happens*, and while you can try to force more or less air if you're conscious of it, you're not going to be doing yourself any good. -Ambassador Love Damek, High of Lord __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? That's because Arovane is exceedingly more talented than Boards of Canada. Listen to Tides then listen to Atol Scrap, that's talent. They're not even comparable, to my ears. Tides is remotely BoC-like, and I liked it enough to keep it. Atol Scrap isn't remotely like Tides, as far as I can tell, and for me was not worth keeping. This is all, of course, at the risk of pissing off those of you who think you have to either like every single thing or dislike every single thing by a given artist... Be flexible, people! :) So yeah, anyways, comparing BoC to Arovane's Atol Scrap is, to me, like comparing Plaid to Soul Coughing's Ruby Vroom. -Lord High Damek, Ambassador of Love np: Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I feel the opposite about both of those. I think Atol Scrap is way better than Tides in the bigger picture. But there are tunes on both that I can't get enough of. I agree that Tides and Atol Scrap sound very different stylistically, and I'm curious what the next Arovane will sound like in context.

I tried to keep away from words like "better" because I'm not saying one is "better" than the other. I was only saying that I didn't think they were that comparable. I said I liked Tides more, but that doesn't mean it's better, only that I liked it more :) It's again a matter of taste, and my real point was not to judge the artists mentioned, just to suggest that there were significant differences between them such that to complain that one gets more unwarranted attention than the other is kind of unwarranted in and of itself. Come to think of it, I should have just said that in the first place. -High Love Ambassador, Damek of Lord __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Actually i'd say that all of his releases (Besides tides) are very similar. You can definatley trace the progression from the early stuff on... whereas Tides is a complete change of pace and style.... it's all fucking excellent though.... One thing I was wondering though was; why was BOC mentioned in the first post? For me the subject line: "Turnips vs. Arovane" would've made as much sense.... apples n oranges.... np: electric company's slow food --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Spoken like a guy who placed his dick in a vise to get more pleasure out of "Music Has The Right to Children" than needs to be. One track from Tides sounds like Boards of Canada. The rest is bliss.

My point was that Arovane can release an album that sounds nothing like the previous, and sound so much better. That's a rarity.

I didn't say I didn't like Tides. It seems that you are the one who is getting rather defensive. Not to mention unnecessarily rude. If you don't like BoC, more power to you. That wasn't my point.

Someone else brought this up recently (I think in that Plaid review that mentioned the balcony), and I'll second it - there's too much emphasis on always having something new and different, and it's sometimes just as difficult to create a great sound and keep at it while keeping it fresh. Personally, I think BoC have done this, though I don't worship them or anyone else as you seem to think I do. It's again a matter of taste, and my real point was not to judge the artists mentioned, just to suggest that there were significant differences between them such that to complain that one gets more unwarranted attention than the other is kind of unwarranted in and of itself. The point is lost already (in true IDM fashion, YEAH!). You stated that Tides was "BoC-ish", which it isn't, that was my point.

Being rude is my bag, MOTHER FUCKER! I cannot see how anybody is still wowed over Boards of Canada when they hardly release anything nor play that many shows. Let alone compare it to Arovane.

It's true, while we try to not make a popularity issue out of everything that people around here praise (hence the impending 'Mention Autechre and you'll be banned' likeminds around here) because it just spurs one stupid thread after another, why not admit it that you like one band because they're more popular than another? I think it'd end up wasting less space. These comparison/contrasts arguments always end this way. I'm disappointed, I'd rather end up being a dick about all of this. Give me a shirt that says "Arovane" on it and you get a shirt that says "Boards of 'Fucking' Canada" and we'll fight hand-to-hand with our 12"'s. One on one. Fuck this, "We've come to a conclusion about this, it's a matter of taste" shit, I want real action. Come to IRC newnet #// and look me up. I'm gonna take you down mother fucker with my arovane 12"s in hand.

I know exactly what you mean. I personally rotate my entire musical collection every year, favoring especially those releases composed within the last 10 minutes (thank God for mp3.com!). I like to stay current. Music is like bread... it goes stale and crusty after a week or so. That's why I never understand how people can go on and on about Coltrane and all those jazz musicians in the 60's, because by this time their music has become, in a manner of speaking, so rock-hard and moldy that you'd, like, break a tooth and get some sort of horrible disease just trying to dig in for an innocent and supposedly nourishing bite. And don't even get me started on blues or classical. So come on, let me tell you a few things, just there's this one thing I want to say. Please I only want to tell you.... Aw, come on. I can sense a weak bit of sarcasm in your words. You mentioned John Coltrane and classical music for fucks sake. Now you tend to think that IDM will last throughout the years as Coltrane and say, lets drop a name here, Mozart. It made me laugh out loud that you are trying to make a point on this. Wasn't dance music (I'm using it as a blanket term here, watch out) based upon what's new and interesting is cool? And what came out in 1998 ("Music Has the Right to Children") sounds dull old and crusty now. If you think that means that's my whole theology on IDM you are mistaken. You fucking nerd. I don't mean to argue the "timelessness" of IDM at all, you call it into question with your reply; you also infer that I only like what's new and cool. That's not my problem, my problem is isolated to Boards of Canada, I think "Music Has the Right..." sounds dated and old. I only like what's on the tip of a freshly milked cock. You made me remeber that I still have their Diskono record that has a rare Boards of Canada track on it, anyone want to buy it off of me? Let me repeat again: I only like what's on the tip of a freshly milked cock. Ike Turner's new album is the shit. You know, if that's all you'd said or seemed to mean, I wouldn't have taken a bit of exception. Instead, you made a fairly silly overarching statement that you didn't see how anybody could still care about them when they hadn't released much recently or done any touring. It's good, I guess, that we make each other laugh. And FWIW, no, of course I don't expect Boards of Canada to have the same staying power as Coltrane, or, say, errr... ummm... Led Zeppelin. If I were drawing an actual parallel, I would expect BoC, eventually, to occupy a position something more like the Raincoats do in rock. They didn't release much, really (and a good portion of their fans kind of abandoned them after that first gorgeous album, although they really should have waited out Odyshape, which is lovely), but they did stake out a very distinctive and affecting area of sound that didn't quite exist before, and a few people still remember them for it. The Raincoats, in turn, ended up influencing, although not defining, nice little college bands like the Throwing Muses. And incidentally, Arovane, on his Tides album, is building on and nuancing a lot of what BoC created, although I don't expect Arovane to have the same staying power as even BoC. Despite the fact that he makes very, very nice songs and textures, I don't see what Arovane is doing as being as distinctive or important as what BoC did, even though Arovane's recent output is much more consistent in quality than are BoC's post-Hi-Scores releases, which can be a bit spotty and redundant. BoC, however, distilled a very warm, vague feeling (nostalgia, mostly) better than anyone else, and I expect that once certain strains of music have gotten out from under their influence, they could sound fresh again, if still very much a product of the late-90's.
