yeah, he has produced it. the album isn't all that impressive, it's nothing really surprising, actually i was expecting more from mark bell, judging from what he did with björks "homogenic" which was all brilliant. then again, björk has been reinventing herself a lot more than dm has as of late. speaking of which, her new album "vespertine" sounds really good. i don't think bell is on it though but i don't know. it's a lot more minimal than homogenic, less strings, more snap crackle pop. /franz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I like the music on "vespertine" a lot more, but.. is it just me, or are her vocals mixed really high? I normally like bjork's music because her voice takes an interesting place with the rest of the music, considering that her lyrics aren't necessarily anything too groundbreaking, but on "vespertine" it sounds like "oh, idm.. oh hey there's bjork.." instead of "hey, bjork's doing idm." Maybe I have a bad copy. cheers, /derek ------- eggytoast.com ------- now with HTML --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

there are mp3s to download on www.depechemode.com and the album's release pretty soon as well i think but to answer your question: ultra is probably the closest you get as far as previous efforts go. i've been listening to dm for a long time and i've got everything they've done, this is their least good effort so far imo. /f --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, I thought it blew :) It has that SOFAD vibe, lots of guitars, a touch of DSP, very clean minimal mixes. I dunno what the evolution of an 80s synth pop band is supposed to be tho' I think they've lost all their edge, there's nothing new. To me the quality of their work can be represented by a bell curve, with Violator at the peak. -Gil On Mon, 16 Apr 2001, synctank wrote:

Thank you, I was afraid i was the only one who liked Ultra. IMO, I believe ultra has taken a different route. Maybe no so much progressive in the aspect of experimenting, but it is a well written album. I don't believe that it is their best album, but it is DM and I believe it is still a good album, I anticipate their next production. Maybe we are expecting the wrong thing from them, like so many did with Radiohead's Kid A. Music should be listen to with no anticipation of a particular direction for a band. You either like it, or you don't, if you don't, well..., that's too bad, cause I find it to be a really good album. Well I think Exciter is their best work since Violator...Ive been listening to it for about 3 weeks now, and it gets better and better each listen. I have been distinctly underwhelmed with everything since Violator, so Exciter really blew me away. To my ears it sounds alot like early 90's Chris and Cosey (Musik Fantastique especially) and Coil from the same period. The production is awesome, alot of electronic touches....I thought the guitars were alot better placed than on Ultra, but then that album doesnt grab me at all. Alot of the songs tend to grow on you, rather than leap out at first listen, well at least to these ears :=) ion --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Hope you're right. At least I liked the single "Dream On". Depeche Mode were the first band to introduce me into electronic music, some years ago (really some :) ). I also think that "Violator" was their peak, "SOAFD" and "Ultra" are interesting albuns but they don't have the thrill of the music they did after "Black Celebration" untill "Violator".
