squeegee diizzidled: ______________________ I am talking about those people who practiced scales, arpeggios, keys, modes, etc... and have an understanding of music theory etc... and then perform live in real time on an instrument utilizing that knowledge and practice to impress a croud. To me a musician must have all of that and most DJs don't. ________________________ hmmm... i'm suspicious of this. this rules out a good number of the musicians i'm sure quite a few of us would agree are some of the best out there. you'd be surprised how far a little inspiration can go, or maybe you wouldn't, but you should at least acknowledge it. i would argue that to a certain extent music theory is limiting because it turns art into more of a science... but then i guess that's par for the course with a lot of idm stuff... personally, i'd rather not be able to identify the devices being used to convey the idea/sound. if i can sit there and do the notation in my head (which i wouldn't be able to do, btw), i doubt i'd enjoy listening to it as much. one of my biggest pet peeves is when i can sit and listen to something, and while i'm listening i'm thinking, "i could do this." if i can do it. and could think of it. i'd rather do it myself. or not. maybe. gregory --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
