re preemptive strike... this is not a second album but a bunch of odds and ends released together, albeit after endtroducing. hence stuff like: what does your soul look like, in/flux and hindsight are pre-endtroducing vinyl EPs... high noon was a one-off single around the same time etc. obviously therefore it's not going to compare to the album proper. BUT he has done a lot of other production stuff since... like on the latyrx/blackalicious albums (and I have to say, that first track on latyrx is incredible), and as you pointed out the unkle album. actually I really love one of the parts of what does your soul look like (I think it's five but I don't have it here so I can't remember)... it's the really long one with the choirboy singing at the beginning, and if I'm not mistaken the theme tune to ancient and obscure kid's audio story tape 'curious george'... which I barely remember from my childhood, i assume nobody can confirm that one :). I don't know if anyone has been discussing this, but there is a new Dj Shadow 7" out right now. DJ SHADOW: Dark Days ("Main Theme" & "Spoken For" mixes MCA 7"). I was told he has a new one on some sdtk, so I assume this is it. Cheers --- Anthony Richardson <ar9541@bristol.ac.uk> wrote:

yes, this is true. it's not that great, but whatever, it's new shadow =). i find that the spoken for mix is so much better than the main theme. shadow did the soundtrack for the movie "dark days", this documentary about dudes kickin it in subways. meh. the soundtrack contains regurgitations from "endtroducing" and "psyence fiction" with some different scratches in 'em. shaun --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There's a new Dj Shadow tune up at http://home.online.no/~torh-e/. It was taken from Gilles Peterson's show. Dj Shadow gives a brief explanation of the track. Gilles later comments that the new Dj Shadow "Private Press' lp will be out on May 20th (for the UK) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well if this song is anything to judge by, DJ Shadow's made himself a lot more relevant to *this* list in his old age. My jury's still out as to whether that's a good thing or not.... -Ryan At 01:48 AM 2/1/02 -0800, you wrote:

Yes..... nice one, squirrel. Did I REALLY hear him say his LP <quote> "*Introduction* did pretty well. Regarded as one of _the_ LP's of the 20th Century..." Whaaat?? I mean, if it's so highly regarded, maybe it's worth getting the name right. Or are my ears deceiving me? Anyway, crazy track. Sounds like the tempo is bouncing around all over the place with a nice fat (or should that be "phat") bassline and mashed up percussion. On another note - goodbye Red Snapper, it's been fun! DJ SHadow - The Private Press (Island). Right - I'm going to stick my neck out and say I Like This ! Hmmm, I approached this with some caution, seeing Endtroducing is sooooo highly acclaimed, etc. etc. and since it's been a 5-year wait for a new album, we all knew it was improssible to re-invent the wheel for a second time. I downloaded a promo MP3 about 2 months ago (Monosyllabic) and was pretty disappointed; but rest assured, it's not indicative of the rest of the album, which far surpassed my expectations. I didn't want to like it. All too many highly hyped albums have not lived up to my hopes, when I heard them after reading gushing reviews I only found them to be whispy and insignificant and somehow not satisfying listens (no, I don't want to name any here, we all know that our relationships to music are personal and I wouldn't want to diss anybody's favourites!) But The Private Press is not just pretty candyfloss; it's got meat and bones. I have to say that it's a solid, substantial body of work, lovingly crafted and cobbled together by an expert. Okay, that's after my initial listen. Maybe my female mind will change... but I think it will only get better I * --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
