We have a lot of discussion here about history of IDM, podcasts, new releases were interested in, etc. Basically stuff we like, but how about a thread for stuff you don't like? I'll start. I don't find Aphex twin very interesting because his new songs are unfocused and too similar to each other, kinda boring. I haven't listened to SAW yet but I imagine I'll like it better.  Faraz

Despite my empathy for his current situation I've never been able to get in to Venetian Snares nor Squarepusher. Both leave me kind of cold. Chang Terhune, I see your post (and mine, but not mark's) twice.  Anyway, yeah I find drill and bass not my thing, its gotta be soothing and make sense at least! That's why I love arovane so much. Not so much aarlenpeers but teh rest of his work is awesome. Anyway another artist i want to add to the list is Pole, I haven't heard him in a while but when I did I found it very boring, and lots of his songs sound the same. Maybe I'll have to give it a few more listens.  On Friday, August 28, 2015 9:20 PM, Chang Terhune <crt@crtdot.com> wrote: Despite my empathy for his current situation I've never been able to get in to Venetian Snares nor Squarepusher. I will say that squarepushers new album turned me. Particularly after reading a bit about the software he made to make the album. Otherwise I agree. Also, I'm new to this service, so hi. I'm Ben. thanks, ben majoy (mobile)

this is funny because in theory doesnt squarepusher .. 'push' a lot of albums? i mean i get the impression that second to afx he is one of warp's bigger electronic acts but yet every other person i talk to HATES his music, not just dislikes but people say stuff just like what you guys are sort of saying, like that his style is actually offensively 'self indulgent' to people heh i guess i kind of see this but at the same time it really doesnt affect me listening to the music or maybe i even enjoy that aspect of it...i loved big loada, hard normal daddy, damogen furies, i thought ufabulum was eh, but then he came out with the kcrw sessions which basically 'fixed' the issues i had with ufabulum... i dunno my one best friend says vehemently "there is NOTHING original or interesting about ANYTHING he's done" Clint Anderson Systems Engineer On Sat, Aug 29, 2015 at 7:01 AM, Mark Schieldrop <mark@schieldrop.us> wrote:

I also like that the kind of stuff by Squarepusher I like (like "Music Is Rotted One Note") is cited as something someone else on the list hates. "Squarpusher. Never could get into his stuff, especially the self-indulgent and extremely boring acoustic stuff." Thanks Mark! We do also need to start a soundcloud free account in the name "SQUARPUSHER" and start posting wierd shit. On Tue, Sep 1, 2015 at 1:27 PM Clint Anderson <clinta@gmail.com> wrote:

I've always liked Squarepusher though stuff like 'Music Is Rotted..' did had some low points ("self indulgent" though I guess he's an artist with the right to make what he wants and I can opt not to buy... or just listen to individual tracks). Never liked Moby, never understood why he was as popular as he was... even for the stuff that was more classified as pop. On Wed, Sep 2, 2015 at 9:34 AM, Clint Anderson <clinta@gmail.com> wrote:

There's good self-indulgence and bad self-indulgence, at least in music. Good self-indulgence is finding something you want to explore and going all the way in without worrying about how it's going to be received or how well it fits standard formats. An example is the way Riccardo Villalobos makes 20 minute tracks. They're not all great, but the good ones are unlike anything else. Bad self-indulgence would be to sing an album of tracks when you aren't a good singer and you write terrible lyrics. I can't think of an IDM example, and even then that's subjective. It's good self-indulgence when you don't think about whether anyone else will like it, and it turns out good. It's bad self-indulgence if you follow your muse, and the result sucks.
