a few things i've recently acquired in order to drown out my neighbour's aggravatingly horrid taste in music: ~ solenoid | metatron split 12" (omco) the most recent omco split with cns engineering & monkey+1 had left me quite underwhelmed, so it was a nice surprise finding out how good this one is. both solenoid & metatron build their tunes on some solid beats, & the result, an undescribable mixture of acid funk dub tinged idm (feel free to sort adjectives differently) which can be played at any speed depending on your mood, manages to reach your brain as well as your feet ~ a rare feat! please spread the word: it's time someone like solenoid gets the attention he deserves, considering the amount of work he puts into his music (rather than, say, MARKETING). ~ hidenobu ito, 'bedroom in the cage' 12" (n-com) forget takemura! hidenobu ito comes off a lot more concerned with actual beats, & his tunes are not so cutesy lamesy as his thrilljockeyed compatriot. (btw, who wants my copy of 'meteor'?) this is a blast to listen to: even the drill n pop tune (featuring ms. random japanese female on vocals) which closes the plate manages to be entertaining. ~ sonic youth, 'goodbye 20th century' 2*12"/2*cd (sonic youth records) not idm by any stretch of the imagination, but i couldn't pass it up. sonic youth have a thing for scaring me off: 'they're going to put out a record called goodbye 20th century' says a friend. instantly i get this vision of a cliched 2rd rehash of daydream nation (the first one being 'washing machine') with a geffen brand. but in fact this release is throughly justified: on the course of 2 discs, sonic youth visits academia for the first time on disc as they cover 13 songs by contemporary music composers such as john cage, steve reich, & a bunch more whom i don't know at all. being totally ignorant to that field of music, it's great to see that the freeest rock band of all times decided to get their fans some musical education for the end of the millenium. of course the playing is flawless, & the list of guest players (o'rourke, william winant, christian marclay...) is not to be frowned at. if anything, get the vinyl for the 12 second cover of yoko ono's 'voice piece for soprano' by thurston & kim's 2 year old daughter coco hayley: probably one of the most oddly touching tributes to a musical genre too often relegated (often by its own members) as too academic for the normal guy's taste. another point for celebration: with this release, sonic youth continue to threaten not to be a rock band ever again. goodbye 20th century indeed. ~ david np: goodbye 20th century, of course!@ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
