hello everyone, i'm in the orlando area and i am looking for blank cd-rs that don't have ANYTHING printed on them. I don't like the ones that have all the company propaganda printed on the disc itself. can anyone help with this? thanks, peter --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i bought a 50-pack i believe of memorex cds (not sure, but they sell them at best buy so they're probably very common) on the spool, no jewel cases, and the CDs are entirely unmarked, priced at about $50 total. they do scuff very easily though, and the quality when compared to some others might not be as good; i can't really tell myself though. there are also discs manufactured by mitsui that are blank but have a frosted top surface. those i've seen come in jewel cases with a printed traycard insert, easily replaced or removed. i personally prefer this for my archiving purposes, if only because at a glance there's no doubt which side is which. also, easier to write on while still not having a label. more just an aesthetic thing though really. as for the philips specifically, can't help you there, sorry matt In a message dated 11/17/99 12:37:22 AM, johan.loones@skynet.be writes:

personally for the autumn records CDr's i have been using TDK CDr's i bought in bulk with jewelcases. for about $150. which isnt too bad. and they have a dark blue underside (which people say, the darker the better quality) and the tops are just plain silver. and you can write on them with marker. ive had no problems with these CDr's just as long as i burn them at 2X speed. later, greg davis autumn records http://www.amug.org/~jkdavis/autumn np: stan getz/joao gilberto-the best of two worlds Dsgnr99@aol.com wrote:

is it true you should only use "Digital Audio" cdr's for recording music? i've heard all others are for archiving computer data and may not work on cd recorder's. Just a few words on this whole thing. First, it should be noted that a lack of matting on the upside CAN (esp. in lower end brands) reduce the refelctivity of media enough, in some cases, to give you trouble playing it back on lower end lasers (cars, older players, videogames, boomboxes). Think of peeling the backing off of a mirror. Second (although I've never had it happen), MANY markers can eat clean through the coating on the top of a cdr into the data layer on the other side, rendering them funky. The matting on the upside serves (sometimes) as an added protectant. Now that I've said that, it should be noted that it used to be so much easier to say "if you use gold media, you'll have no reflectivity trouble, as it's the most reflective". Nowadays we have black, platinum and MUCH improved silver/blue formulations which (per my usage) in some cases bypass the golds for widespread readability. BUT, the adage is" the best media is what works best for YOU", i.e., what your players will all read easy. Burning at lower speeds can sometimes improve this, but personally I burn at 4x and I want my media to be able to handle that. Buy in small amounts until you find what works in your lowest-end players, then find the most economical. THEN look for sales and buy in quantity. I mention this whole thing because that lack of top layer HAS made a world of difference for me in SOME media. I have had certain brands which work wonderfully with the matting and when buying the same media without it they were scrap plastic for me. When talking cdr-ing, a LOT of factors come into play...your hardware/software/firmware/media/method (speed, dao, tao, etc.) and, importantly your playback units. What works for someone beautifully may be coasterville for you. Generally you can find decent deals on generic, unlabeled cdrs at computer expos/shows as well as all over the internet. Also, buying in quantity and on the spindle will often yield label-less media. Check under the "specials" link here as well : http://www.CD-Recordable.com/ jeff
