I don't think so. It's meant to appeal to only the richest audiophiles. The player is $5,000 and the software is $25-$50 with only about 10-50 titles available. As a SACD player it does sounds astounding, as a regular cd player it's about on par with a $800-$1500 Denon,Adcom,Naim etc. It's big, it's impressive and it's built very, very solid inside and out. Sony will sell a few units to a certain select crowd and see what it does. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Remember the format wars with the original Mini Disc,DAT and DCC? Well, now we have cd players, carousels, and mega-changers.Add DVD to this list. Then we have cdr's for home (and computer),soon to follow portable recorders and then shorty we will have DVD-R and of course, I forgot to mention the CDR-RW,DVDR-RW formats. The first two generations of DVD players will not play back most CDR's (as some of you have discovered) and most of the current models will not either. (All of this will spill into the mobile audio market as well). The current SONY SACD player will ONLY play back two channel audio. You can only use the analog ouputs to ouput the superior sound. Digital output for the regular 16 bit cd's (we don't want you copying those luscious sounds). So the very next model will have multiple channel outputs so you will be able to listen to fully discrete sound (5.1) for music only titles like the current DVD movie titles. You simply just buy another Digital pre-amp or a/v receiver that has (6/8 channel) inputs. Will it play my dvd's? Forget about it! Anyone noticed the ad's for the DVD AUDIO (only) models coming this X-mas? What's this? A dvd player that will play dvd discs but with only audio on them? Of course you may get some still photos or animations but who wants to have to hook this up to a tv in order to see the interface or to be able to navigate through the menu!? When can I get the (5.1) multi-channel version of this player? Better yet, which models will play the 2,000 regular cd's I already bought? Of course the (cheap) SONY SACD will play back both formats. SONY and PHILLIPS want you to keep buying those outdated and cheap-sounding cd's so they can keep rolling in the royalties from each and every cd you buy. If you buy into the dvd -audio only format how will they contine to get paid? Plus everyone knows that cd's are sold at their cheapest price possible....those darn things are EXPENSIVE to make! So how is that current DVD player of yours working out? Dolby Digital sounds great on movies (a million times better than vhs tapes), but have you heard any Dolby Digital audio-only releases? There out there. You may have to get out the ole' magnifying glass to find them but their there. But which one's? You say, the 2 channel or 5.1 channel? The 24 bit 96khz version or the 5.1 DTS 20 bit version? DTS?????? You mean you haven't bought the available DVD video/movie titles that are FINALLY out? Everyone knows that DTS titles sound better because they have less compression right? You can hear that if you shell out the cash to hear (big-name) producers go into the studio and "re-do" the normal stereo recordings into wonderous 5.1 channels of DTS (audio-only titles). Better check the official DTS web page for availability because you won't find them at Tower or Bent Crayon or anywhere else. Well the store told me that my current DVD machine will play the "new" two channel 24 bit discs'. It says so in the glossy ad in (Stereophile)? Most will play back the disc, but it downsamples the 96khz signal to 48khz.What? BTW how is that DVD player you bought last X-mas at Circuit City doing? You know the better one that is DIVX-equipped? How about those Ae releases in the DIVX-Audio only format....didn't those sound great? Wait a minute I thought I had the latest and greatest sound on my newest Denon cd player. It says right on the front it plays "HDCD's" which I was told are 20 bit and the best you can get? What about all those Chesky/Telarc 20 bit re-issues I bought or for that matter those special "gold" re-masters from PINK FLOYD or the Mobile Fidelity versions I thought those were "the shit". Screw it, I'm just gonna' get one of those portable MP3 players and download all of my music. No computer? Try one of the portable products with the "memory stick" coming and record your friends vinyl. Or better yet, just dust off that old Casiotone you got for X-mas years ago and make your own music. Anyone can do it. Arrrrggggggghhhhhhhhhh! P.S. I heard that the last Star Wars movie was record in 6.1 surround sound. _____________________________________ ---------------------------------------------~ Curt King cking@xnet.com COLUMBIA AUDIO Chicago,IL.USA.EARTH "Taste is the enemy of art" _____________________________________ ----------------------------------------------~ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
