Q: How do you prefer to hear Ae recordings? Speakers or headphones? Car, home or work/class? Just curious...I've noticed that I like different releases under different listening conditions. I was prompted to this after digging out Incunabula today and realizing that, to my ears, it's a crime to play anything off that album through headphones. laz

It's all about the Cerwin Vega 500 watt studio monitors in my little apartment.... Incunabula suddenly sounds so rich, beautiful, warm and inspiring..... the sounds literally wrap around me and cuddle all the senses. Same with most anything Ae has ever put out. Headphones are okay for some things..... but for the most part it's all about filling the room. i like LP5 in the car. it seems that when i'm driving, i can really pay attention to the music. as long as the driving is stretches of good highway with little traffic. when my girlfriend lived in DC and i was here in pittsburgh, whenever i'd drive down to visit, i'd grab a stack of discs that i hadn't been able to fully digest. what a great way to spend four otherwise worthless hours or travel? alan! np:bauri:sassafras flip On Mon, 6 Sep 1999, lazlo wrote:

Tri Rep ++ always alone in bed in a dark room. Likewise Plastikman's "Consumed". It's almost ritualistic. Purging. Euphoric. Spiritually cleansing. Right, and now back to the real world : the lovely Ms Lopez is on the radio ... I * np : Ae - Dropp

Er, what roads do you drive frequently, so I know to stay off. Heh he.

Actually, I totally agree. I too find myself driving long distances as well. And while were on the Ae tip, I took an imediate shine to lp5, but not to ep7. Yet, thanks to the miracle of long distance driving I can now fully appreciate it too. Right on. -andrew

(Intelligent Commuter Music) :) I just felt the need to start an offshoot to this thread, since my morning and evening commutes are the times when I get most of my listening in (in my car, no one is around to criticize my musical tastes!). As someone who drives > 300 miles in a week, I have ample opportunity to go through my musical library and listen to ones that hadn't gotten much playing time before, either because I'd forgotten about them or because--as in %andrew's case--I hadn't taken an immediate shine to them. Among my more recent rediscoveries: old Front 242 albums. Keeping with the Ae thread for a bit, I tend to favor both LP5 and Amber while I'm in the car; I like my selections to serve as sort of a soundtrack to the commute, and those discs fit in with that nicely. Chiastic Slide is also a good one for the more gloomy days. Incunabula and Tri Repetae I save for actual road trips. :) Other good commuter "soundtracks" I might recommend: first and foremost, The Orb's "Auntie Aubrey"; after those first two tracks (the best ones, imo), I'm almost there! Also recommended (and not just because I got it for free), Kumquat! That disc is awesome, especially for the morning commute. Absolutely PERFECT driving music for when you're still in the process of waking up; it's better than coffee! And it lasts roughly as long as the drive, so it works out perfectly. Well, that's my two cents. Anyone else have any rush-hour favorites?

During the summer I found myself driving to work through downtown Chicago every day...... discs I couldn't rip out of my stereo if I tried include: Plaid - Rest Proof Clockwork (Nothing) (though I was always skipping between tracks 1,2,7 and 10) BleepbloopRadio presents: Intellect / Esthetic (Cdr) (almost a shameless plug, though dammit I think it rocks) Terry Lee Brown Jr. - Terry's Cafe (Plastic City) Luke Slater - Freek Funk (NovaMute) Friend - Hotrod (Dot) Adam X - Mastermix Vol. 2 (Wax Trax) and for nearly a month I listened to Tom Middleton's "Jedi's Night Out" mix CD on DMC/Mixmag. I find myself veering towards house-y 4/4 mix discs while I'm driving.... the more minimal the better.... though that Adam X disc, while certainly rough and banging, is still nice driving music. Which reminds me that I was once driving to Toronto listening to this cool CDr I made with a selection of Autechre remixes.... and I was listening to it really loud on my funky 6-speaker Alpine system (which strangely is worth more than the actual piece of shit rice rocket I drive).... so after listening to all this distorted grating polyrhythm stuff I put in another CD... and it sounded all distorted and fucked up too..... ended up realizing later that I blew both of the 6.5 inch speakers in the back listening to Autechre, but didn't realize it until I put on another disc..... thought that was kind of funny..... Aaron np: palmskin productions - evolution (ae remix) Great fookin' track, m8.

Tri Repetae gives me goose bumps in my car. Especially track 2 on disc 2. (ok, so I don't have the track names memorized, and the CD is all packed up in a box right now) I like Incunabula on headphones as well, and Amber is very nice on my home system. I don't like lp5 or ep7 much so I haven't found my preferred listening location with them... it's funny, I didn't even think about the fact that I like each album better in different places like that until you mentioned it... --Wes

For me, some music can ONLY be fully appreciated lying on your back on a hard floor on a hot day. The Orb, Beta Band and various Aphex stuff all come under this heading. Plus if anyone walks into the room, you look like a complete idiot. <60s Frisco hippy voice> 'Whoa... sorry, Man. I was just... freaking out.'

For me Ae is only outdoor music. There's nothing to compare with feelings one gets by listening Amber walking among the trees in the park or forest or by listening Tri Repetae observing some industrial district. Though there is no limitations to what you should see, just go outside. I can digest Ae indoors only if i'm stoned to death. However the question of using drugs during listening Ae is very important. I think hash is the best way to listen to it. I tried acid, heroin like substances, speed and all of them do not support the feeling I get from listening Ae under pot stonie. Any opinions on that?
