most of the timestretching of that era' (and in the present) was done with good ole' samplers! the Akai's were used quite a lot then. there are a lot of software-based timestretching programs out there (which vary a lot in quality). timestretching is used all the time in re-mixes or production that requires a part(s) of a song to extend a bit longer or to be shortened. the efx you are aware of were actually accomplished by people "abusing" the feature to get the desired effect. _____________________________________ ---------------------------------------------~ Curt King cking@xnet.com COLUMBIA AUDIO Chicago,IL.USA.EARTH "Taste is the enemy of art" _____________________________________ ----------------------------------------------~

Any Akai sampler gives you the option of 'Intelligent' or 'Cyclic' timestretching. Cyclic's the classic technique, it works like early granular synthesis, here's a visual demo: MC yells' "Dub Plate Preshaaaah" when you stretch it cyclically, it comes out: "DuDubub b PlPlalatatete e P PrPrereseshshahaaaaaaaaaaahah" you set the length of your grain (cycle, this case three letters) and the % of new time (20% to 1600%, memory depending, in this case 300%). Intelligent timestretching is more like the software algorithm you get w/Sound Forge & SoundEdit 16 (awesome...), it sort of second guesses louder bits (pitch/character) and just does pure-wave-period stretching on quieter bits. I may be speculating a bit randomly on all of this. Timestretching is one of those magical things which in theory, shouldn't be possible. I hope I never REALLY figure it out, 'twould be no fun.... -Våt ____________________ Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge PO BOX 382864. Cambridge, MA 02238 http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket/index.html
