speaking of electronic jazz, the much publicised innerzone orchestra set last night at the montreal jazzfest was pretty amazing. 125,000 people were in attendance, they said. can't wait for "programmed". but i haven't yet sorted out if its was "free jazz" or "fusion jazz". hmmm.... ----Original Message---- Crtrdge003@aol.com wrote:

speaking of electro-jazz, a question about the new isotope217 record -- which is swell. track number five is built on top of this bass (or is it guitar?) figure that just sort of goes bum-bum-bumbumbum-bum-bumbum. it's very very familiar to me, but i can't place exactly where it's copped from. can anyone who's heard the record help me out? jeff

Maybe that's why it was boring ... I was hoping for something groovy, but it wasn't, except maybe for the last piece of the show, instead we were served one drum solo, one piano solo, one "folk" song, 2 or 3 afro-cuban tribal dances and percussions, and some background echo and effects ... but not much else... I was expecting some really cool jazz-techno-house fusion... just to show people that techno is not just "big beats" but can also be fun to listen to ... even if you're not into it. Kid Koala did a bit of what I liked, at the end of his 5 mins. a bit of groovy scratching and turn-tabling. but it lasted about 5 mins ... before him, was wiz-kid A-Track who did a small set also ... I may be harsh, but I was expecting something way different. I was not at all in the mood for tribal dances, of folkish song... or even way to much mc's. Jeff-- I'm not certain, but it sounds close to something Pigbag did in the early 80s. Dave Segal Managing Editor/Alternative Press Reviews/BPM/Reissue Redux/Origins Of Cool Secret Ions on WCSB Thursdays 9-11PM EST www.wcsb.org np: isotope217- utonian automatic [thrill jockey]

I thought of Miles and Herbie, too, but I imagine the sampling fees would be too exorbitant for a Thrill Jockey band to afford, whereas they could nick a Pigbag bass line and nobody--save a few old trainspotters--would notice.
