I managed to stay out of the debate, and I don't really want to start it up again, but I've become a huge fan of MP3s in general and Winamp in particular. Winamp being more or less the standard windows program for playing back MP3's. You should check out www.winamp.com and mp3.com for more info. Right now I'm playing tracks from Analogue Bubblebath Five, with a window open to the Cthuga plugin that synchronizes visual effects to the music. I'm not going to give URL, but there is a virtually complete archive of aphex twin tracks out there. Fire up your favorite web search tool and knock yourself out. And frankly, I don't feel bad about having copies of this stuff. Though it sounds good, it's like having a cassette copy, not an original. And I've already spent more than my share of money on Warp, Rephlex and other labels. Hell, I'm good friends with my local record store owner, but I think he still slavers a little when I show up with my check book. And as for artists being 'offended' by MP3s, eh whatever. Show me an artist who hasn't nicked a sample without asking, or used a pirated copy of music software, and I'll take him or her seriously when they're offended. Shit sakes, I wouldn't be surprised if the entire Warp and Rephlex roster havn't all been using the same cracked version of Atari ST Cubase. If you think people are going to download MP3's and not buy records or CD's, think again. Are people going to haul a computer everywhere to listen to music? And how do you scratch an MP3 into a DJ set?

actually, i just read that someone has developed a big 12" round thing that fits on a turntable and sends signals to a specially modified MP3 player and can scratch accurately to a millisecond. sounds kinda silly to me but who am i to stand in the way of progress. -jsd-

Someone posted to 313 about that. I don't have the post saved, but you can check the archives at hyperreal. It involves having a BE Os computer, special LPs, special preamp, etc. I kind of wonder what sort of LP that guy was using to trigger the thing. The general case scenario would involve the recorded material to be unique throughout the whole track, have no aliases of forward and backwards material, and be decodable no matter what speed the record spins. And be immune to scratches, skips, backspins etc. Sounds pretty twisted to me. For that matter it's something where you have to add a bunch of expensive hardware to an already expensive DJ setup. You might as well buy vinyl and spin it.

Hi, I've just transferred all my stuff to a new server. I have a couple of mp3s up at http://www.fourplay.com.au/sound.html which worked fine at the old place, but here for some reason something's gone weird with the server (I think it's the server) and when I try to download the mp3s using Netscape it treats them like they're text files and puts all this garbage up instead of saving the files. Interestingly, when I used (*gasp!*) Internet Explorer (which I hate and will not use as my normal browser), it downloaded them properly. Can anyone help me with why this might be and what to do about it? Thanks, Peter. -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.fourplay.com.au/me.html FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag.
